I've always felt like this song was about the singer's relationship with someone famous, like an actor or a model. I'm not sure if he ever dated anyone of that nature (especially while writing material for their breakthrough album), but it sure seems like he has a girlfriend who smiles for a lot of other people (for a movie or a photo shoot) but never really means it.
