Ok - interesting comments but this song is surely about someone who has an obsession with another person who is unobtainable (married, famous...??) It is a kind of sad and deluded world in which the singer lives - he interprets any smile as just meant for him and he is reading something more into it than there should be. Melancholic - beautiful.........
I've always felt like this song was about the singer's relationship with someone famous, like an actor or a model. I'm not sure if he ever dated anyone of that nature (especially while writing material for their breakthrough album), but it sure seems like he has a girlfriend who smiles for a lot of other people (for a movie or a photo shoot) but never really means it. He's the only one who gets to see her genuinely smile.
