Sometimes near death experiences can awaken someone much in the way a Christian is re-born and has a new chance at life with Christ. Your life is ultimately changed after being born again and I think that was the message or image the video was trying to portray. Not to mention it is no coincidence that Sonny sings to the sky in effigy. Hes certainly not singing to a deceased girlfriend. :) Knowing this, you can just simply look at the lyrics and easily decipher what this song means.

Why would telling the world about a love of a woman cost him everything(not to mention I'm not sure how this would apply to a general self discovery)? This is obviously about a love for Jesus Christ. Hes talking about how he doesn't care if it hurts their record sales for being labeled a "Christian rock band". As for the self discovery aspect, you are actually partially right when you mention this. When Christians are born again, the discover themselves in a whole new light.
