The person that she adores is unaware of her/she is hidden whenever that person is experiencing joyful moments (celebrating a birthday, at a party, laughing with friends, etc.) (just like when the sun shines on the earth, the moon is hidden. the happiness=when the sun is shining on the earth, there is life.. flowers bloom, plants grow, people absorb energy, etc.)

the only time that we are "together" or "connected" or "side-by-side" is in the night, when are thoughts transcend and we have similar thoughts. ie when we think of the deeper things in life, our goals, our past, our future, love itself, etc. and in these moments, it is like our phantom lips touch in this case the two people are represented by the two ships, two lone ships traveling through the sea (depth of the ocean and lone atmosphere rep. the deep introspective thoughts)(just like the moon and the sun watch two ships that pass each other in the ocean at night, the moon's gravitational pull creates the tides that sway and push the boats forward, it's almost like the moon is brushing against the earth's surface as its gravitational pull does this, hence "two lips pressing ground the tides")
i may be putting more into this than what was intended by the writer but, these are my most fav. lines of the song and mean this much to me every time i hear it..it makes my heart cringe whenever i hear these lines sung, especially since sia has a ridiculously amazing voice;)
