REM can stand for rapid eye movement which can occur during sleep. the opening line combined with the title is very meaningful (if i'm correct): sleep will carry us + midnight to midnight = sleep will carry us from midnight to midnight. i think it might be talking about sleep being a waste of time, e.g."a waste upon the hours". we could dive too far might mean we could get too caught up in our dreams.
but then again, he also says we couldN'T dive too far most of the time. that's why it could also be that sleep is GOOD. in the chorus, he could be saying we let our worries and failures go as we drift away from earthly things, "we toss our failures at the Earth".
