This song is essentially about Freddie’s fame and the fact that although he appears to be happy, this new celebrity is not enough for him because his relationships are unfulfilling. It could also concern his sexuality because at that time he was struggling to convince people he was straight, and that couldn’t have made him happy, but that’s just a thought.
He starts off saying how his lover has left him again. He carries on saying how he’s going to drown his sorrows (he had a growing drug habit at this time also) etc and then avows his true feelings
“So don’t expect me to behave perfectly and wear that sunny smile”. As we know Freddie was never one to discuss his private life and often wore this ‘sunny smile’ in order to conceal his true feelings from the ever intrusive public, in this line he is just admitting that.
Then he carries on explaining that he doesn’t know how to handle his newfound fame “I’m causing a mild sensation with this new occupation. I’m permanently glued to this extraordinary mood”.
I.e. he’s not happy.
Then he concludes saying that he’s only adjusting to his new celebrity and is not happy although it may seem otherwise. He invites us into his mind to show us his true feelings which are different to what we would presume- “I’m in the news I’m just getting used to my new exposure, so come into my enclosure and meet my melancholy blues”.
This is one of my favourite songs; the piano is amazing, it’s a Freddie classic.
