I know I'm most likely wrong on this, because there are no supporting facts. But I've always wondered if Hannah could possibly be an illegitimate daughter John had back in the day that he might not have been around for. Most of the lyrics would fit that scenario. But as far as I know, he doesn't have any kids.
@FiniteSD Hello, idk if anyone uses this site anymore/you'll see this (18 years ago, holy moly) but John and his music mean so much to me. Reading your comment kind of blew me away ngl. I was doing my classic run-through every year or so of Curtains and this song just hit me like crazy in the car and actually started balling (I have an Ex Hannah as well that I still have feelings for sadly, and Im admittedly not in the best spot in my life rn) I was trying to decipher the lyrics listening it over...

But I decided to look up the lyrics/if anyone had their own take on it and HOLY SHITE lol you could be very much be on to something. Could of been a miscarriage/abortion one of his girlfriends had that deeply affected him or even illegitimate like you said. Makes more sense vs my craziness. A kind of guilty plea for not being able to (or wanting) to carry out the duties of fatherhood makes a lot of sense. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your thoughts
