Strung Out – Unkoil Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is definitely about dimethyltryptamine (DMT). For the longest time I thought this song was about LSD or maybe shrooms. But after doing "extensive research" and especially after reading Dr Strausseman's book, "DMT: The Spirit Molecule", I have zero doubt in my mind now that this song is about tripping on DMT. Every single line in this song fits perfectly with a DMT experience. I can dissect each and every word, line and verse in the song. Do a Google search on "dmt trip" and read some descriptions of the effects of this drug. Then read the lyrics again and you'll see I hit the nail right on the head. I was really surprised nobody else here mentioned DMT.

DMT is the most powerful hallucinagen known to man. Some of the "trademark" effects are VERY INTENSE visual color patterns, the feeling of an outward expanding head (conchesness), arriving at a strange place, with a speaking atmosphere and breathing walls.

DMT trips only last about 10-15 minutes which fits perfectly with the narrator's plan to commit to a trip right before calling it a night. I think the selling point on my theory is that DMT is the only hallucinagen that can be smoked that gives the EXACT effects that are described word for word in this song.

John Frusciante – Control Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song might be about drug addiction and coping with recovery/sobriety.

I'm not gonna gonna walk you through the words cause they're right up there.

To me the verse could represent a drug addicts thought process while on the verge of relapse. He seems to be both justifying and running from a reason to get high again. Even the manic depressive sounding strumming fits The mood perfectly.

The chorus seems to kick down the door and slip right in like an uninvited guest as the slide guitar screams the cries of regret. I think this might be the relapse. The dream like feel in the chorus also seems to harness all the emotions I could imagine an addict would experience during a relapse.

All of the lyrics and even the title of the song make perfect sense for this scenario.

My favorite lines are:

"I wanted to build a stage
I wanted to feel this way"

This has been one of my favorite Frusciante songs ever since I first heard it on the day it came out. And up until now, I have never even tried to think about what he was singing about.

I could be off by a mile. You never know with John Frusciante. Let me know what you think.

Jeff

John Frusciante – Every Person Lyrics 19 years ago
I think mrsfrusciante hit the nail right on the head. John believes in some heavy shit.

He's always talking about how there are spirits that enter his body and influence his decisions and help him write songs. but if you relate that to what mrsfrusciante posted above, it doesn't sound so crazy.

I think this song is about his perspective on the illusion of existane.

If there is one thing that I've learned from studying Johns work, it would be to digest it slowly. It is barely ever what it seems at first. There is always a deeper meaning behind every aspect of it.

I know I'm most likely wrong on this, because there are no supporting facts. But I've always wondered if Hannah could possibly be an illegitimate daughter John had back in the day that he might not have been around for. Most of the lyrics would fit that scenario. But as far as I know, he doesn't have any kids.

Unwritten Law – World War Iii Lyrics 19 years ago
---Stoneface---You don't know what you're talking about. Have you ever seen Unwritten law when they still had John Bell???

I don't think you fully realize the insane amount of energy UL harnessed in those early days.

My first exposure to UL was in 93' At the old SOMA in downtown San Diego. I went to see headliners Green Day but Unwritten Law stole the show. They played songs like WWIII, Kill to Breathe, Tribute, Superficial Society, Driven, I Will Refuse, Obsession...etc......That was the REAL Unwritten Law!!!!!!

I was blown away to find out that they were from my little neighborhood. (Poway/PQ)I bought their 6 song demo cassette (it came in a funky little plastic case) For the next 7 years I never missed 1 show (in SD)

I'm not bragging or claiming to be cool because of this, I'm simply stating that I've had a pretty damn good perspective on the evolution of UL.

For you to claim that there was no huge change between John Bell and PK is completely ridiculous. It's hard to compare Bell to anyone from the Blue Room Recording alone because it cost almost nothing to make in a hole in a wall studio on an almost bankrupt record label. (It's still my favorite though)

You would have had to have seen them live back in the day to get an accurate comparison. They lost a step when they started watering down their live set with newer slower happier songs around 98'.

Don't get me wrong, I was still really into their music, they just weren't the same. They became better songwriters. They still put on an awesome show. I still bought their CDs and enjoyed every bit of their new music. But it was a huuuge difference.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect that.

It's too bad Unwritten Law is dead now. They died to me the day Wade left the band. Wade was the heart and soul of Unwritten Law. And now that Rob Brewer has left the band I refuse to even give the new stuff a chance.

It has nothing to do with selling out, Scott Russo's bank account has nothing to do with my opinion of his new band. There mourning CD is hollowed out cookie cutter boring bullshit that they are trying to pass off as Unwritten Law. I almost broke down in tears when I heard him singin about dancing on the radio one day.\

I do realize that I am about 4 years too late for this argument. But I'm sure someone will read this.

A few years ago I found a crappy live recording of "I will Refuse." Oh man!!! That brought back soooooooo many memories. I haven't seen them play that live since at least 94'

Cheers!

Unwritten Law – Lame Lyrics 19 years ago
I heard from several sources that this song was written about one of Scott's longtime childhood friends that couldn't get his shit together. After years and years of putting up with his lies , addiction and disrespect, this was Scott's attempt to cut ties with someone he loved like a brother. Failed attempt, I should say. Cause I've seen them hanging out I haven't varified that this song is about the person that I was told it was about. But it really doesn't matter. The lyrics tell a clear story. I won't name names cause that would make me the one that is lame.

Jodi was Scott's wife. Now Ex-wife. This is the second song he named after her. The first one was "Suzanne," which is Jodi's middle name.

The line, "Red stack the bong" is referring to their roadie and good friend of mine, Jack "RED" Kane. Red travels with the band and is in charge of the merch booth and apparently stacking bongloads. Next UL show, stop by the booth and say what up to Red.

Unwritten Law – Before I Go Lyrics 19 years ago
This song was written for Scott Russo's son Nico. What Scott told me was that when Nico was around 3 years old he would cry and throw a tantrum every time Scott left to go on tour. He didn't know how to handle his dad being gone for months at a time at such a young age. So Scott wrote this song for Nico to comfort him while he was on the road (Australia). That is where the basic song idea was originated. The important thing is that it makes no difference how you or anybody else choses to interpret this song. It can be about anything you want it to be about. That is the freedom of music.

Unwritten Law – CPK Lyrics 19 years ago
C.P.K. (Crazy Poway Kids) was the name of a gang some bored white Poway kids formed as a joke at Abraxas high school in the late 80's. The song itself is not about C.P.K. the gang, they just used that as the title. The meaning of the song is pretty self explanatory. When we are kids most of us don't recognize how easy life is. We constantly dream of the day we turn 18 and can move out and be "free." We waste a lot of energy trying to act older by doing adult things. But when we grow up and move out on our own we finally realize that "the grass IS always greener," and life is no longer the holiday it once was. We never really understand how good we have it, until it's too late. It's a cycle that will keep repeating itself for the rest of our lives. We can always try to live in the past but the important thing is the life we live now. "Right now."
