Lyricists write this stuff to share with us, it is not really the readers' job to take what they say word for word. Think for yourself. And if you notice, the caption above the comment box says "what does this song mean to you. I believe this song is about a person who maybe falls to peer pressure, doesn't necessarily about drugs. Maybe these two friends were both going through a difficult time and they were both there for each other like brothers but one day, one of em just snaps and gives in to temptations, resorts to alcohol and whatnot for an escape. Sure, it sounds a tad far out but that's what you're supposed to do when interpreting lyrics.
