This is probably my favourite Doors track. I played it to a class of young teenage Chinese students (studying English) and asked them to tell me the meaning of the song.
I was damn impressed with their answers. It's about someone who is the deep depression of the night who wants to be happy again by seeing the dawn etc.
This is my favorite Doors song as well. You ESL class came up with a nice interpretation. I don't really buy it, but that's what conjecture's for, right?? ;p It's common for the sun & light to symbolize "good" or happiness, or Life. And for the Night to represent Light's antithesis. But, for someone like me, and maybe Jim, I'm a night person. I prefer the soft night to the glare of day. I love it's mystery. I love how I can go unnoticed in the shadows if I want....

Or find "love", or whatever. The day is more "normal". It's about work, and healthiness, and being too busy to think a lot. The night is about intimacy, and silence, and mystery, anonymity, and reflection, and rest.. The night was made for writers, as well as lovers, and insomniacs. ;p
