Don't believe it is about true love- but compassion. Here is a guy or girl who has been severely wounded and therefore Hides in their shell. They go through amazing efforts to conceal their pain from the world- but feel it just the same. In the very act of concealing, they prevent others from ever warming to them. The fact is- they don't love themselves- and therefore no one else is permitted to love them. And then they blame others for not loving them. I think this feels too familiar. I have loved this song for about 25 years. I never realized it was written to me. And now I am about to cry.

@MWhitney Nice interpretation. Everything doesn't have to be about love.
