He's singing to a girl that he loves and tells about easch part of his relationship with this girl and gives visual indications of each emotion that was felt by him during the time that he was with her. Sadly, when it comes to love, Cain feels that he is always getting seconds and never getting what he truly wants the most, which is a good loving relationship with the girl he loves. The first verse is about what he felt like while he was in love and giving out all the love he has to offer but not getting any love back. Cain compares himself to a seagull in the way that he feels like he is just staying out of the whole love situation and never getting to get to the ground where he can find love. Feeling like he is always on the outside looking in on love and and the people who are in is love is shown to you in the next few lines. When he says he is "scavenging the land for leftovers from the crowd," he could be feeling like he is getting no love or attention and he has to go out looking for whatever love he can get that hasn't already been taken by the "crowd." His feelings of being unloved are made more obviously known when he says he stand slone and forgotten without any of the love or affection he feels that everybody needs. The song is made more into a romantic and cute song when he says that he picks up the phone and calls this girl even though he knows she's not home. In those same lines, Cain says that he is "stone cold sober," when he calls her, implying that there was nothing affecting his thinking when he called her so it must have been love. Cain also says that he is only a dreamer to think that the girl is in love with him like he is with her.
I wrote an essay on this for my lit class.
