well, this could be mainly personal, but i alway took it as looking back after a break up, and seeing the "old" you, when you were with the other person as someone else, i mean otherwise "call me by his name" could be a bit freaky, haha.
but thats more personal i think, but it makes sense to me, and i think that what the singer writes songs about doesnt matter, its what they mean to you.
