I want to know what he knows
I want to feel what he felt
I want to go where he's been
I want to know what he knows
I want to hear your secrets
I want you and I want him
Cause you smell like apple candy
and we're singing hallelujah
and the edge in your affection broke my skin
but I want to know what he knows
and I want to touch what he touched
and call me by his name
Cause I know you made a promise
and told him he's your lover
make me feel the same
Cause you smell like apple candy
and we're singing hallelujah
and I'm feeling so much younger than my years
and I want to know what he knows
and I want to go where he's been
I want you and I want him
So you said "go find some trouble"
and you would do the same
and we opened up our hearts and we could change
but you smell apple candy
and we're singing hallelujah
and you smell like apple candy
and we're singing hallelujah
I want to know what he knows
I want to feel what he felt
I want to touch what he touched
I want to go where he's been
I want you and I want him
I want to feel what he felt
I want to go where he's been
I want to know what he knows
I want to hear your secrets
I want you and I want him
Cause you smell like apple candy

and the edge in your affection broke my skin

and I want to touch what he touched
and call me by his name
Cause I know you made a promise
and told him he's your lover
make me feel the same
Cause you smell like apple candy

and I'm feeling so much younger than my years

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. To me, this song is about having two simultaneous crushes on a girl and her boyfriend, and being unsure which one you want more. I like my interpretation too much to consider any other, but it hasn't been mentioned so I'm throwing it out there.
I know this might sound a bit retarted but when i hear this song i kinda get the impression that he might be talking about a girl who is commited to her relegion and her God. Ben Lee never said this, it's just my interpretation of some of the lyrics like:
"Caus I know you made a promise and told him he’s your other lover"
"I want you and I want him"
"And you’re singing hallelujah"
Yeh, well that's just my little theory... Does anyone else get this impression too or is it just me?
yeah i get that as well. especially So you said go find some trouble and you would do the same Let me open up our hearts and we could change its like he tried to get involved or soemthing.
excellent song though
Yes, definitely. I read somewhere (on Amazon.com, I think) that this song was about Ben wanting to have a threesome with another couple where the guy was bisexual - what a crock of sh-t! When you really listen its just obvious that the "him" in the song is God and what Ben wants is to "know what he knows" - to be as close to her as spiritually possible, and to share in that. At least that's exactly how it hit me when I really listened to it. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one.
This song struck me differently. I thought it was about wanting a girl who was taken. And although he wants her, he knows they are good together. So rather than taking her from him, it's like he wants to become him. That way he can have her and their good relationship.
I think both the relationship/taken situation and the religious theories are both good. I'd never thought of the religious undertones until today, and I think you guys are right. And of course, on the surface it could also be about a strictly human relationship. Good observations!
oooh! i never even thought this song could be about God...but I guess since i'm listening to it right now, i can see it! But I still like to think about this song being about him wanting to know what it would be like to be with whoever he is talking about but she is or has already been involved with someone else...but then he does say "i want you and i want him..." then the whole hallelujah part doesnt really make sense in my mind so maybe it is strickly religious...either way, i love this song!
well, this could be mainly personal, but i alway took it as looking back after a break up, and seeing the "old" you, when you were with the other person as someone else, i mean otherwise "call me by his name" could be a bit freaky, haha. but thats more personal i think, but it makes sense to me, and i think that what the singer writes songs about doesnt matter, its what they mean to you.
omg you all have really awesome ideas...the religion part seems like it can be true...but also i think it might be about a girl that is taken and he really wants her bad lol. I wanna ask ben lee himself about this one lol...it is a real puzzler!
My parents went to a Nickel Creek concert last night where Ben Lee was the opening act. Somebody in the audience asked what this song was about and he said that he was kissing a girl and afterwards he found out that she had a boyfriend. The lyrics fit and it makes a lot of sense..
