I disagree with killersrule....I really think this song is about heartbreak...not a realxing seascape sort of picture. Just because this song is upbeat, I dont think it meant that Sam or the other guys were all chipper when they wrote it. I think its more along the lines of a false smile or a hollow laugh type of song. "I must have had fun 'cause now I'm broke" I think is Sam trying to tell himself the ole 'It is Better To Have Loved And Lost Than To Have Never Loved At All'...From my perspective, he's sitting around everywhere jsut looking at people and making up their lives as he watches them: 'All these people, They look so, they look so happy to me' and the whole Ring thing I think is the basis of his sadness. His old
flame has moved on because he never paid attention to her (hence the "I'm blind in this town, it's hard to see things that aren't right in front of me"), he comes back to her and she wants nothing to do with him, he leaves but cant stop thinking about her (i.e. the whole no ring bit)
