Me and the ocean
Me and the sea
I don't think so
I don't think it was meant to be
Take me off, somewhere cold
Gradually just growing old
And someday maybe make of me an honest man

Yeah
Well, I don't see no ring on these fingers
I don't see no ring on these fingers
Life in this town, it's like a joke
I must have had fun, cause now I'm broke

Down by the ocean
Oh by the sea
All these people
They look so, they look so happy to me

What if all, I want want in this world
Turned out just to be an honest girl
Turned out just to make of me an honest man

Oh Yeah
Well, I don't see no ring on these fingers
I don't see no ring on these fingers
Life in this town, it's like a joke
I must have had fun, cause now I'm broke

I don't see no ring on these fingers
I don't see no ring on these fingers
Life in this town, makes it hard to see
Things that aren't right in front of me

Oh yeah
Ba ba ba bada, ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba bada, ba ba ba ba

In this town, it's like a joke
I must have had fun, cause now I'm broke
I'm blind in this town, it's hard to see
Things that aren't right in front of me
Yeah

I disagree with killersrule....I really think this song is about heartbreak...not a realxing seascape sort of picture. Just because this song is upbeat, I dont think it meant that Sam or the other guys were all chipper when they wrote it. I think its more along the lines of a false smile or a hollow laugh type of song. "I must have had fun 'cause now I'm broke" I think is Sam trying to tell himself the ole 'It is Better To Have Loved And Lost Than To Have Never Loved At All'...From my perspective, he's sitting around everywhere jsut looking at people and making up their lives as he watches them: 'All these people, They look so, they look so happy to me' and the whole Ring thing I think is the basis of his sadness. His old flame has moved on because he never paid attention to her (hence the "I'm blind in this town, it's hard to see things that aren't right in front of me"), he comes back to her and she wants nothing to do with him, he leaves but cant stop thinking about her (i.e. the whole no ring bit)

i agree with killersrule, this song is soo laid back and peaceful, i like it. i think its about his girl wanted all his money or w/e , not his love, so loves like a joke. its juat a whole fake town, and he doesnt wanna be tied-down by his snotty golddigger chick, hence the part that he doesnt see a ring on his fingers, great band

i agree with lindseyD4563.. although this is quite an upbeat song i definitely think it is about breakup! sam's voice is quite melancholy. i think the ''i dont see no ring on these fingers'' is about commitment? maybe thats what the break up was about - lacking commitment. anyway very cool song, very cool band!

I think the upbeatness of the song is supposed to be a litle ironic. So is the "I dont se no ring on these fingers" part. he really wants a serious, lasting, open relationship; the one between and "honest girl" and an "honest man", which he hasnt had. He feels like life is slowly passing him by in a shallow town. He feels like hes just watching the tide and the people walking by waiting for the girl who it seems he will never meet. I think thsi is what it feels to want to settle down for a while.

I think it means he went for a night out in Vegas, and wakes up in a hotel room or something with his new 'wife'. He denies it, by saying "I don't see no rings on these fingers", realizing he was drunk and had no recollection of the night, "i musta had fun cuz now i'm broke"....What other town would love be a joke in neway?

i don't know what i think when i hear this song. it's so catchy and quirky. the opening lines about the ocean definitely set the scene for me: i think of a crowded boardwalk next to the ocean. you know, the kind with carnivals and vendors and horrible plastic souvenirs... well, this narrator-man is just hanging out on a beach towel watching all the families and couples and "happy people." (okay, i usually think of songs as music videos, so this is just my interpretation) he's probably with some buddies and they wanna pick up chicks or something so they go up to the boardwalk itself. and all this time he's thinking: i want something serious; a sweet and honest girl who can me an honest man. meanwhile, he doesn't see any rings on those fingers. all the couples are flightly and flaky, girls and guys who will turn out to be just summer flings. life in that town is just a joke... he must have had fun wishing, but now his heart is broke. it's hard to think of commitment and serious relationships when all he's come face-to-face with are surface lusts and teenage flings. that's what i see when i hear this song. i think it's catchy and cute, but not really a deep, deep song. it's addressing non-commital relationships from a more light-hearted angle.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
