Emo is a sub-genre of punk. Is Bright Eyes punk? Nope, it suuuure isn't. Conor Oberst writes emotional lyrics, but it isn't at all like emo music. The style is totally different. And if you compare it to emo, the lyrics aren't really like emo. I'd say Bright Eyes is more just the simplest definition of a song with lyrics: poetry put to music. Beautiful words and beautiful sound. It can't be classified, because there really isn't anything out there that is very similar to it, and other things like it can't be classified. If there isn't a name for it, I say we pool our thoughts and invent one.
Oh and by the way...screenwrite, don't let it piss you off so bad when people mis-genre music. They don't know. But if they're just idiots who don't know....well then go and hate them. Or, as in your example, those who call Good Charlotte punk. Those people are dumbasses too.....heeheehee.
