Oh wow, these lyrics aren't quite right; it's "Don't add up to anything", not "Don't know how to do anything".. that mistake kind of distracts from the meaning.
it sounds a lot like my parents. at that point in the marriage it definitely shows how diamonds and babies and cars really don't add up to anything. even a diamond ring is just a symbol. to value a car is kind of just materialistic. and the parents are too busy fighting to really value the children. it leaves you wondering what is left.
my favorite line;
"my turn this time they cried/and everyone walks in a line/around and around in a circle until they die/my turn this time they screamed/and diamonds and babies and cars/don't add up to anything.."
