I think that this song is about the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-union of the two Germanies that followed it. People in East Germany were calling for revolution - or the overthrow of the Soviet regime - because they dreamt of a better world and they thought it would be easy once their country re-united with Germany. It turned out, however, that West Germany wasn't without its flaws and a lot of East Germans, who weren't used to a free market, for example, wanted to go back to the way they used to live in East Germany. Hence the words 'Es war 'ne lange Nacht/Ich wünschte wir wär’n niemals aufgewacht' - the better world of which they had dreamt turned out not to be much better than the world in which they had lived; it would have been better had they not awakened from their dream in the first place.
