Wow I got something different out of the song. It sounds like a song about a guy who loves this girl who is incapable of love, she cuts him off when she starts to fall. He hopes that she can change but he knows and she knows that she will never change, she will always be emotionally guarded and afraid and he will always be needy. It also seems like something happened the night before maybe she let herself love him truly for a while then rationalized herself out of it (I do this to myself all the time). Maybe she tried to open up to him and he saw something he did not like or maybe she did. In the end their codependency makes the one in the same, he needs to "help" her and she needs to "help" him.
