The girl is being monitored(like how the government monitors everything else).
While she is dreaming she almost comes into contact with Shavo(who is connected to what seems to be an umbilical cord of some-kind), but before they meet they are separated.
The egg that the girl holds near the end are her ideas, and dreams. The old person is probably a manifestation of the government and it makes her drop the egg(hence she forgets her ideas)then she awakens....
