This song is about leaving the past behind...keep focused on the future, don't let your past haunt you. This is a really nice song....I read somewhere that it is about Axl's troubled childhood.....
I love this song because it is simple but really nice. And Slash's solo is electrifying as usual. Like you guys have already mentioned, this song is about forgetting your troubled past as axl did. He was ragged in high school for living like a Rockstar. And I'd like to cortrect some people here. Axl did not do excess of dope, he was an alcohol addict.
In the video to this song Steven Adler is shown in flashbacks more than anyone else I think this song is sort of dedicated to him, basicly saying "You were a good friend but goodbye"

I find the 'book of memories' line hilarious. I can imagine Axl needing one after wrecking his own brain with drugs.

yes on reading metallica fans very good opinion,to which i agree completeley (although matt wasn't a bad drummer) Izzy stradlin made the band with Axl originaly and was the very cornerstone of the band So when axl ruined the band and izzy left GNR fell apart

This song appeals to me so much. It helped me to forget about this girl I used to like but thankfully she is in my past. Excellent song.

About leaving the past behind and looking to the future. It could possibly have some shrouded meaning to Steve Adler, but I'm not too sure. Maybe I'm reading waaaaaaay too deep into it.
