Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same?
Nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain
We've been through this such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain, ooh yeah
Love is always comin', love is always goin'
No one's really sure who's lettin' go today
Walkin' away
If we could take the time to lay it on the line
I could rest my head just knowin' that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin' in the cold November rain
Do you need some time on your own?
Do you need some time all alone?
Ooh, everybody needs some time on their own
Ooh, don't you know you need some time all alone
I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you?
Oh, oh, oh
Sometimes I need some time on my own
Sometimes I need some time all alone
Ooh, everybody needs some time on their own
Ooh, don't you know you need some time all alone
And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain, oh yeah
I know that you can love me when there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness, we still can find a way
'Cause nothin' lasts forever, even cold November rain
Don't ya think that you need somebody?
Don't ya think that you need someone?
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
Don't ya think that you need somebody?
Don't ya think that you need someone?
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
Don't ya think that you need somebody?
Don't ya think that you need someone?
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one

Don't ya think that you need someone?

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Punchline

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

"November Rain is a song about not wanting to be in a state of having to deal with unrequited love." - Axl Rose
This song is absolutely fabulous, and my favourite of all time. The emotional intensity of the lyrics combines beautifully with the soaring melodies to take the listener on a journey from despair into hope. I'll now offer my interpretation of the lyrics, which I feel is true to Axl's original intention.
As Axl says, the song is about unrequited love. He is still very much in love with a woman, but she is no longer in love with him. He uses a metaphor to express how difficult it is to cope with unrequited love: "It's hard to hold a candle, in the cold November rain." Here, holding the candle stands for him trying to hold onto his love for her, while the cold November rain is the absence of her love. It is difficult to love someone who does not return the feeling. And inevitably, his love will also die, just as the candle will be extinguished by the rain. He does not want this to happen, but eventually it will, unless she can recover her love.
So that's the central message. I'll now do it fully, lyric by lyric.
"When I look into your eyes I can see a love restrained"
"But darlin' when I hold you Don't you know I feel the same"
''Cause nothin' lasts forever And we both know hearts can change"
"And it's hard to hold a candle In the cold November rain"
"We've been through this such a long long time Just tryin' to kill the pain"
"But lovers always come and lovers always go An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today Walking away"
"If we could take the time to lay it on the line I could rest my head just knowin' that you were mine All mine"
"So if you want to love me then darlin' don't refrain Or I'll just end up walkin' in the cold November rain"
"Do you need some time.. on your own Do you need some time.. all alone Everybody needs some time.. on their own Don't you know you need some time.. all alone"
"I know it's hard to keep an open heart When even friends seem out to harm you"
"But if you could heal a broken heart Wouldn't time be out to charm you"
"Sometimes I need some time.. on my own Sometimes I need some time.. all alone Everybody needs some time.. on their own Don't you know you need some time.. all alone"
"And when your fears subside and shadows still remain"
"I know that you can love me when there's no one left to blame"
'So never mind the darkness we still can find a way'
"'Cause nothin' lasts forever even cold November rain"
Here the music changes completely from the more melodious orchestra to what sounds like a breakdown, with wailing guitars and sinister chanting. Although there is hope for the future, the current situation is still causing him immense pain.
"Don't ya think that you need somebody Don't ya think that you need someone Everybody needs somebody You're not the only one You're not the only one"
I am in shock. This is literally exactly how my last relationship went that ended over a month ago. The details aren't exact, but the situation is spot on...wow
@GNRLoves I can relate so much with this song. Sometimes I feel I'm both the girl(her doubts in love and building the wall around her and inability to flourish) and the guy because I keep holding the candle in the rain. To have someone put all my feelings in words and defining each verse, is phenomenal, so thanks man, I'm appreciatin this song even more.
@GNRLoves I think the part

"But lovers always come and lovers always go
An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today
Walking away"

From the way he phrases it, i think its just a general statement of how always people were and will come together and leave each other. I mean he describes that both loving someone and understanding a relationship will not work out, will always happen, he is just unsure who will take the first step in their relationship. I dont think he meant that the girl had many lovers before.

Also the last part where the music darkens i think it all happens inside his head. He understands that it will be over but doesnt want to accept the break up and thinks to himself that everybody needs someone so he sticks to his old "trying to kill the pain". From what is shown on the videoclip, he finally took the decision.
@GNRLoves I love your detailed interpretation here!! It’s one of my favorite songs because it has a lot of me in it. I was very young and pregnant and still in love with my baby’s biological father. I was eight months pregnant and GNR were giving a concert in November. That night it was raining and that night I found out he was cheating on me. He went to the concert with his new love while I was in his house with his mom and pregnant with his baby.
@GNRLoves I created an account just to thank you for the explanation of this great song.

I am feeling the same things with Axl at this time so I can relate to it..

@GNRLoves I think this description is accurate, but I will take it a step further. It is about the life of trying to love a Rock Star. There is so much debauchery that the trust is not there, messing up both involved. For him it is the closest he can get to real love, but realizes that he can never truly love with his lifestyle. Nothing he can do can changed that so he is hopeless. \r\n\r\nChristians know this is not true. We can turn to Christ who does last forever, and will give us a true love. Hopefully Axl finds out that his dark lifestyle has no peace and will turn to Christ someday.
@GNRLoves ????
Best interpretation of this song I’ve heard! Love GNR and this song holds a special place in my heart ❤️ thank you for this!
This song in my opinion is the best Depressing love song there ever was. This song hits the heart like a shotgun especially when , you just broke up with someone, a loved one dies, or your having relationship problems, constant fighting ect. This is one of those songs that you wanted to put on a cd, and let them know exactly how you felt, when you send it to them in the mail.
Cold November Rain.. The worst part within a relationship the tough times, no one wants them, but we all have to go through it. Nothing lasts forever, not even cold november rain...
This song really sets your mind in a dream like state, with its innocent , cruel, ashamed, loving , and sometimes without words,... I put this song in my all time top 10 book..
Rob, you put a lot of my thoughts into words! I don't even know what to say, but I wanted to let you know that when I read your comments, I was right there with ya. :)

~ DR76

finally figured out what its about, its about a couple who love each other but she isnt sure she's ready to commit and is restraning her love and the other just needs to know where he stands and he understands what she's going throughand how some people need some time on there own to confirmthere feelings etc and beneath all of whats going on they know how deep there love is. The november rain represents the troubles in there relationship and its not going to last forever and some relationships break up and others last but it's worth trying. What a beautiful song im sure mayy can relate to because thats the reality of giving your heart and self to somebody you love there's always be risks but nothing will necessarily happen and could be a match made in heaven.
by the way, slash kicks ass. :)
i'll die to have slash's hat in this video:O:'(:):D
I've loved this song for as long as I can remember. Well since I heard it the very first time anyway.
As for the meaning. I never really knew until recently. This is what I think it is about. The girl he is in love with is suffering from chronic depression. She does love the singer, and he obviously loves her, but for whatever reason, probably do to her depression, she is afraid of their love, and she always holds back. "Love Restrained"
She instead always seems to end up in relationships with people that are bad for her. They may cheat on her, or beat her, but they are not good for her. Some people commonly do this subconsciously, because they sabotage themselves from having the real love with the right person who truly does love them like the singer. That's where the lines:
"We've been through this such a long long time Just tryin' to kill the pain But lovers always come and lovers always go An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today Walking away" come from.
Basically, he knows he can love her, but he knows she needs to learn to love herself first. That's what he is saying in this part. She brings him so much love and happiness, but never enough, as she is always holding her love back. Walking in the cold November Rain is him being alone waiting for her to come back to him and love him.
"If we could take the time to lay it on the line I could rest my head just knowin' that you were mine All mine So if you want to love me then darlin' don't refrain Or I'll just end up walkin' in the cold November rain"
The singer has spent a good bit of time by himself in the meantime, and he has learned to love himself, and being alone. That is a big problem for people that are chronically depressed, and that is why they are often depressed. They let fear over power their love, and fear brings negativity, and pain. That's where the whole last part of the song comes together:
"Sometimes I need some time.. on my own Sometimes I need some time.. all alone Everybody needs some time.. on their own Don't you know you need some time.. all alone And when your fears subside and shadows still remain I know that you can love me when there's no one left to blame So never mind the darkness we still can find a way 'Cause nothin' lasts forever even cold November rain Don't ya think that you need somebody Don't ya think that you need someone Everybody needs somebody You're not the only one You're not the only one"
So basically he is hoping she can overcome her depression, and let love into her life, and they can finally experience true, real, deep, passionate, love together.
I may be way off on this, but it makes sense to me, and that is what I get out of it.
Makes perfect sense to me
The guy is in agony because something the chick he digs is taken. The chick kinda digs him, too, but there's something getting in the way of her switching guys. He's finally half given up - the current boyfriend is like november rain -- it makes you completely miserable, but you know eventually it will go away.
Basically, something along the lines of what Vincent Vega would have been thinking on his drive home if he hadn't found Mia Wallace OD'ing, or something.
This song kicks ass and proves that all rock bands have a soft side.
this songs never gets old...i can hear it over and over and ive always loved it
This song is about an off and on relationship where they truely love each other but have problems to work out, its so phenomenal, i love this song one of the best !
