If I break down all that I am
A field of wires we'll see what it's worth to walk
To break the lines
Of alternate steel
If I turn around what matters the most in time
We're going nowhere

Don't tell me now
The days I've had
To fill it up but spill instead
Talk to remind
Days weeks and hours

All in time will be
Later on we'll try
Hollow peaks we've climbed
All these things I've seen
How it feels to be something on

That's how the days go
If I break down all that I am
A field of wires we'll see what it's worth to walk
To break the lines
Of alternate steel
If I turn around what matters the most
In time we're going nowhere

Don't tell me god
The dreams I've had
To fill it up but spill instead
Talk to remind

All in time will be
Later on we'll try
All we gave to fly
Hollow peaks we've climbed
All these things I've been
How it feels to be something on

For anyone who has completey given all they have only to lose it all, this song is very well said.

I think this song as a lot to do with taking the bad along with the good in life. Many people talk about the injustice of why this or that bad thing happened to them, but there is good in everything. Even the bad things make you feel alive, and you wouldn't be experiencing life without them.

I think this song is about a life wasted without accomplishment or passion - if he breaks down all that he is, he sees the sum of his life is nothing. If you spend life waiting to pursue your true dreams "all in time will be, later on we'll try", you never understand the joy of how it feels to be something on - literally ON, fulfilling your true purpose.

    Beautiful song.

maybe "how it feels to be something on" is referring to the perils of being alive, simply existing and all the rotten stuff that comes with it sometimes.

To me this song simply means that you've given everything you have to somebody, you're true loving embrace, and for a while the relationship works, but then suddenly it comes to an end (not sure how) and the Chorus line "How it feels to be Something On") may be referring to how it felt to be with that girl, and now yer basically trying to pick up the pieces of your heart and your life and move on, but it's tough...

That's what it means to me anyway, not sure about the idea of it being about drugs, but we all have our opinions I suppose. :-)

This is the song that got me into SDRE as well, and now I own all of their albums.

    Don't let them die.

thoughts about this song. heres my interpretation.

if i break down all that i am ----if i really think about myself and who i am a field of wires we'll see what it's worth to walk-----if we walk a harder path to break the lines of alternate streel------we learn more about ourselves

if i turn around what matters the most in time we're going nowhere------------------if i go back and have too many regrets and dwell on the past, i dont move forward

don't tell me now the days i've had to fill it up but spill instead (the times i tried to accomplish something but messed up) talk to remind days weeks and hours-----------dont try to tell me that all the mistakes and failures in my life, were meaningless and are just time wasted, because i learned from them.

all in time will be later on we'll try hollow peaks we've climbed all those things i've seen-----------------we'll try again, after evaluating past failures and learning from them----

how it feels to be something on-------this is what life is about

thats how the days go if i break down all that i am a field of wires we'll see what it's worth to walk to break the lines of alternate streel if i turn around what matters the most in time we're going nowhere

don't tell me god the dreams i've had to fill it up but spill instead talk to remind days weeks and hours

all in time will be later on we'll try all we gave to fly hollow peaks we've climbed all these things i've been how it feels to be something on

so i think the main idea of this song is pretty simple. learning from mistakes and continuing on without regret is the only way to make progress in life.

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
