To You Lyrics

the gods and the saints preserve you
cos nobody here deserves you
i'm living my life in flashback
since i lost my card for cashback
and i've gone to rack and ruin
since i don't know what you're doing
there's no clear or present danger
that i see in any stranger

someone, somewhere said to me
will someone somewhere set me free
won't hurry up or harry me
will someone somewhere marry me

to you [4x]

the line on the screen has broken
what once was asleep has woken
i cover your face in make-up
praying you'll one day wake up
i've littered my life with magic
yet i'm neither dead nor tragic
the gods and the saints preserve you
cos nobody here deserves you

someone, somewhere said to me
will someone somewhere set me free
from all that i'm supposed to be
will someone somewhere marry me

to you [4x]

someone, somewhere said to me
won't someone somewhere marry me
won't hurry up or harry me
will someone somewhere marry me

to you [4x]

I always thought it was about a girl he loved dead...here's my explanation.

"The gods and the saints preserve you, 'Cos nobody here deserves you."

She's preserved in heaven because she's done her time here on earth and is ready to go, thus 'nobody here deserves you'

"Will someone somewhere marry me, To You"

He wants to be married to her in heaven a.k.a. he wants to die to be with her

"I cover your face in makeup, Praying you'll one day wake up"

He sees her at a funeral (perhaps) and hopes that she'll somehow come back.

I'm not 100% sure, but that's my interpretation of the song.

I'd have to go with silentexclamation, when I first listened to the lyrics of reminded me of the poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe, the tone is beautiful, yet morbidly desperate.

I agree perfectly with GuitarBoy! Here is my story about this song:

A girl I fell in love with a few times is working at a video rental shop where they´re also selling second-hand cds. So I went by to visit her at work and to browse through the cds. I heard some songs of "I am Kloot" before but I never listened to their first album. She asked me, if she should play it on the stores sound system so I could listen to it. I agreed and it took my breath as we were listening to the first song and she was walking towards me... it fitted so perfectly!

I always wanted her so bad but she was never interested in me beyond a platonic level. And every time I realized that she doesn´t like me the way I like her, I was feeling desperate... exactly like the guy in the song....

This song has a tone of morbid desperation. I think its about a person who admires a girl for whatever reason (beauty, perhaps?) and this quality seems so perfect that "the gods and the saints preserve "her". He is desperate to get with this girl. Notice the fragile "to you" at the end of the chorus.

Those are my personal thoughts on the song.

never thought about this song that much but i would go along with silentexclamation... whatever it's about it's a very nice depressing song.

I think it's admiration and the shock one feels as an effect resulting from one to the other and To You, since the word marry is being used as in Marriage, then the card for cash back could be saying that one would save funds, do anything it takes in addition to what would appear as money to service and have their lover or "love"
