(The Gym Is) Neutral Territory Lyrics
why find a nice way to tell you you suck i hate your guts
you act so boring and if you don't stop those looks i'm gonna poke you in the eye
who are you anyway you think you're second to none
keep your eyes off of me you creep
get you're hands out of my pockets you thief
and all you kids so smart with your cool looks
don't you know?
stop talking about all the stuff that gets you pist
don't you know?
put your hands inside your pockets and draw deep breaths and fumble for the right words
keep your hands inside your pockets and draw blank stares you're living in the real world
start a band throw a brick your laziness makes me sick
'cause the gym is neutral territory
you act so boring and if you don't stop those looks i'm gonna poke you in the eye
who are you anyway you think you're second to none
keep your eyes off of me you creep
get you're hands out of my pockets you thief
and all you kids so smart with your cool looks

The most straightforward interpretation is a high school conflict between the writer and another group of students (who are 'so smart, with their cool looks'). These 'kids' annoy the writer with their drivel ('Stop talking about all the stuff that gets you pist'), attitude ('You're laziness just makes me sick'), and theft ('Get you're fuckin' hands out of my pockets/You fuckin' thief'), presumably all during gym class.
Another conflict in high school that could take the place of this punk vs jock story is a gender conflict between young men and women. Instead of theft of property, the song is now a young woman accusing young men in gym class of sexual assault ('Get you're fuckin' hands out of my pockets/You fuckin' thief').
The benefit of the alternative interpretation is that it is almost certain that unwanted touching is almost certainly more common in high school gym classes than property theft and a more significant invasion. One problem with the alternative interpretation is that gym clothes often don't have pockets. While this was true at my high school (no pockets was a firm rule), i believe my it was somewhat unusual in its absolute pocket-ban. Jocks vs Punks is such a punk-rock cliche; gender conflict is much less prominently showcased.
More Lysistrata and less West Side Story.
