Vapour Trail Lyrics
First you look so strong, then you fade away
The sun will blind my eyes, I love you anyway
Thirsty for your smile, I watch you for a while
You are a vapour trail in a deep blue sky
Tremble with a sigh, glitter in your eye
You seem to come and go, I never seem to know
And all my time is yours as much as mine
We never have enough time to show our love
The sun will blind my eyes, I love you anyway
Thirsty for your smile, I watch you for a while
You are a vapour trail in a deep blue sky
You seem to come and go, I never seem to know
And all my time is yours as much as mine
We never have enough time to show our love

There was this moment back when I was at university, I was walking around listening to Nowhere through my headphones and suddenly the last track “Vapour Trail” comes on. Suddenly everything goes into slow motion. I see people wipe the sweat from their forehead slowly, I see girls blinking slowly and everyone talking and laughing — slowly. There are those epiphanies you have in life that you sometimes can’t explain — and I guess the best explanation I could give for the one I was having at the moment was Ride. You see, I think “Vapour Trail” is about knowing something’s going to end (in this case probably a relationship) and not minding it. As I looked at everyone walking about their lives and the sun slowly setting — I realised that I don’t mind mortality. I’m going to end, we’re all going to end, at some point and all that will be left when we’re gone is a vapour trail of our experiences that perhaps someone, if we’re lucky, will try to hold on to.
that was beautiful, thank you

This song is short and sweet to the point. That feeling after a relationship has subsided, well it feels like a vapour trail is left in the sky and in one's heart.
I used to have a friend who lived by me, and our apartment complexes were seperated by a golf course.
There were many nights when I listened to this song on my walkman, in the cold breeze of the night. Just me, the stars, and this AMAZING song.
I just can't tell you what this song does to me. I feel bliss...the bliss that comes from falling in love. I also feel a little longing, because I wish I had someone to share this song with.
Oh, and the end when everything drops out and it's just the viola (I've been told it's a viola...I'm not too literate on string instruments)...oh my god. The song just enters a new dimension of beauty and feeling.
God, this song is amazing. I get choked up every time I listen to it.
@velmaxcorgan What happened to your friend? Or between you and your friend? Don't say "18 holes" lol

Just you mention them once, then not again in your description.

13 years since you wrote that. 20 years since Ride came into my life.

I was still a teenager then. Me and Mark still had hair. I know it's a terrible thing to say but I felt so much better about my own hair loss when I saw that Phil Oakey and Mark Gardener had suffered (and I chose that word deliberately) hair loss. Both of those I had hair-envy for.

Others I...
Others I had hair envy for were John & Simon (Duran Duran), Roland Orzabal (Tears For Fears), Tim Burgess and saving the best till last George Michael. His hair was always immaculate but I preferred how he had it in the Wham era .... All of it but especially how it was in the videos for Last Christmas & A Different Corner. Different styles but both incredible.
OK....
2 realisations have just hit me Square in the face.
1 Everyone's gonna think I am gay. Not so. Sorry lads.
2 I'm talking (without invite) about George Michael's hair on a page about Ride.
I am a fan of Ride BTW. I have seen them live in 1991 so don't think I have wandered in by accident.
Going now.
Am I the only one who heard of the book through the song.
No, I also heard of the book through the song actually, though I haven't read it yet.

I can never get over how amazing this song is...whenever i hear it, i get so sad yet so happy at the same time. I love it...
Makes me feel old to remember when this song was actually a hit here in America..Never even heard of the Perks book until now..Ugh. Beautiful song that has passed the test of time. Simple song about the impermanance of things...even Love.
this song was on the tape that charlie made in the perks of being a wallflower. i love that book and when i downloaded this song i fell in love with it. i alwasy imagine this song when sam is in the back of the truch goign through the tunnel. lovely.
I discovered this song through Perks also.. that is the best book, truely.. it was so... real, for lack of a better word. "I feel infinite" when I listen to the songs on the mixtape that Charlie made for Patrick. "We accept the love we think we deserve" is truely the best quote from the book, in my opinion.
Nice words sweetness. I cant really decide if the lyrics are sad or trying to be an expression of love. Well, obviously they are an expression of love. But is the about the end of a loveship, or one in instability? hmmm. It IS one of the most delicately beautiful love songs ive ever heard. And it does make me sad.
This was the first song I ever heard from ride I think. Well it was either this or Like a Daydream. I now own everything. Reminds me of getting blazed in college. So good.
