Train Of Thought Lyrics
He likes to have the morning paper's
Crossword solved
Words go up words come down
Forwards backwards twisted round
He grabs a pile of letters from a small suitcase
Disappears into an office
It's another working day
And his thoughts are full of strangers
Corridors of naked lights
And his mind once full of reason
Now there's more than meets the eye
Oh, a stranger's face he carries with him
He likes a bit of reading on the subway home
A distant radio whistling tunes that nobody knows
At home a house awaits him
He unlocks the door
Thinking once there was a sea here
But there never was a door
And his thoughts are full of strangers
And his eyes to numb to see
And nothing that he knows of
And nowhere where he's been
Was ever quite like this
And at heart
He's full of strangers
Dodging on his train of thought

the song is just about the dehumanising effect of modern life, the rat race. the man just sees strangers everywhere now. he only finds solace in this thoughts now, and chooses to often lose himself in this thoughts.
Oh my goodness. I have to admit i didnt have that kind of interpretation at all of this song. I got the feeling it was about a blind man and how he 'sees' the world around him. I guess it was one of the later lines that did it : 'And his eyes too numb to see' Although there are many conflicts within the rest of the song to this idea. For example : 'He likes to have the morning paper crossword solved' But then again, who's to say he actually DOES solve it? A lot of A-ha's songs can be like this, I think the contradictions are to be taken Ironicly. It's a tough one to work out, I must admit, and even though this is now around 20 years old, and I've known the song for all that time. I still struggle with firends on it's meaning.
It is about the typical everyday life rat race kind of stuff (the video makes the especially obvious), but that's only the backdrop. If you get around to certain places the subtle main meaning is obvious. He frequents sex clubs.
I can just imagine wearing a leather jacket, sunglasses and listening to this this fucking cool tune.
One of the coolest bands from the eighties and no one has anything to comment at all.....Well, I'll step up to the plate.....This song is the coolest...the xylophone is amazing.....I like to think it's about getting lost in your thoughts....It seems to be the only escape from the dull monotony everyday.....just my interpretation tho.....
Interesting thought about the geezer in the song being blind.
I never bother reading into lyrics and just take this as a tale of a guys boring day to and from work.
