The Immovable Motorist Lyrics

All the wasted life
In my car tonight
I got steel and bolts and lots of holes inside
I\'m immovable
Got a tired soul
I\'m afraid I just don\'t feel quite like myself sometimes
I get angry so easy anymore
And miss the signs
All the burning lights
In this town tonight
The suburban sprawl
All those even lines
And if you don\'t feel lonely
Then you can\'t feel anything at all
And if you don\'t feel lonely
Then you can\'t feel anything at all

Does anyone know the meaning behind this song? on the surface it seems as though it is about a car accident but i get the impression it runs a lot deeper than that.

i think it's about becoming someone you don't want to be...a lonely person who misses who you were, and being far away (either literally, or figuratively) from everything you're used to...quite likely dealing with depression

This song really strikes me as losing your soul as you grow. It's a really good analogy, the driving. People used to walk everywhere and thus when they went somewhere it was an investment in effort, a journey. Now with cars and other technological improvements our lives are easier but we begin to lose our vitality. In the song, look how you can become a different person behind the wheel. You start driving just because its easy and convenient and you can do it but do you ever step out into the world and explore what you are seeing? Hence "all the wasted life in my car". "I get angry so easy..." I think anybody who's driven long enough will find that a great many people turn into someone else behind the wheel, often becoming angry over the slightest things. "The suburban sprawl" and "even lines" carries this image further in that while the quality of life is going up and we have greater control over our lives we're losing our souls due to our separation from the natural world and each other or becoming spiritually tired "And if you don't feel lonely, then you can't feel anything at all"
