Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
hey, savemefromtears, here's something that might encourage you a little bit. I recently emailed Mike Kinsella and explained to him how much I appreciated his music and how it got me through some truly difficult times. He responded by saying, "wow.....you just gave me a reason to wake up tomorrow morning." It just goes to show that everyone means something to someone...even if you've never met or heard of this person in your life, you will always inspire someone by simple continuing to persevere from day to day. I have gone through times where I've felt like life couldn't have handed me any worse cards, but when I look at the big picture i realize how lucky I have it to even be given the choice of life or death. Some who die deserve life, and some who live deserve death;but, it is not up to us to decide who deserves what. Life is a bitch sometimes (i won't pretend like I know what you're going through completely) but things have a tendency to work themselves out in time...that can mean days, or it can mean years. Life has been good enough to give you inspirations, like this music..and there are certain things worth living for. This music only has meaning if someone is alive to relate to it.
am i the only one that does this or does anyone else like walking around outside in the semi-cold of a clear autmn day listening to this song or any song by american football for that matter?
... this song makes me think of days where the light from a sunset makes everything that really really cool shade of orange and casts long shadows across the streets, with the frigid breezes blowing your hair back and making your nose cold while you just sit and ponder about the beauty and serenity(?) of those quiet autmn afternoons...

simply amazing...its so perfect...the instrumentals, the timing, the lyrics...too bad they hadda break up, its a true shame! anywho...its a brilliant song, i recommend checking out American Football!!!
ya i've been into american football for a while and was sad to see them break up.
i almost commited suicide about a year ago and for the longest time i wanted this song to be played at my funeral. its weird though because although i don't want to end my life as of yet, i still want this song played at my funeral.

Good news for anyone sad that there is no more American Football because frontman, Mike Kinsella, has gone solo and made a one man band Owen. With many of the similar sounds of American Football, Owen is no let down. I love Owen just as much as American Football

Capn Jazz, American Football, and Owen are three of my favorite bands of all time, but i could just never get into Joan of Arc - They just seemed a little too pretentious and a little too strange. This song means a lot to me though, after moving to ontario at the end of last summer. Me and my girlfriend at the time both knew I was leaving and so things had been kinda on the rocks. I put this as the last song on a mix cd i made her before i left. Let's hope she still listens to it.
