this is even more beautiful when you see the words. i think its about the guy seeing a friend who is changing what they're like to get further either in society. he is basically saying to this person that he doesn't need them to change, because he sees them as who they really are, and thats all that matters. it fits into a lot of different situations, like peer pressure at school to maybe needing to be different to advance in your profession, but the message stays the same - you're great the way you are and your real friends know that.

um...ok...I think it works like this:

"Save the wrapping for another, dressing doesn't mean a thing to me" - what you look like isn't what you are, and he knows that no matter how his friend dresses she will always be the same.

"Submission for a ladder rung. You decide what you're used for" - his friend is disguising who they are to gain popularity and get further in life. He is saying that it is their choice to give up who they are for a popular cause.

"I know what you are, what you are. I see clearly what you are" - it is the friend's choice on how they deal with their image, but he will be their friend whatever because he can see past the visual and actually see who they are.

Doesn't have to be a friend could be an enemy. Someone who he's criticizing. Saying, you may change and become more popular because of the way you dress or act, but I see right through you and I know what you REALLY are.

Of course the mood doesn't reflect that, but I think it works that way too.

this song means that you can only be the person you truely want to be and be happy with it not by apperance, but by within. And you must not be someone who you are not in order to gain things in life. nobody can change you, you must do it on your own.

Thanks! Never worked out the lyrics before. This song is an old demo that never made it on to Static Prevails, possibly not meant to be heard by anyone. So it doesn't really matter if you hate it.

I love Jimmy Eat World but this song sends me doolally. It's waaaaaay too slow and I end up screaming "just fuckin finish the batard word and hurry up!" I mean how long does it take for the guy to say submission? i'm all for putting emotion into your voice but for fucks sake this just takes the piss.
