It's about the affair that this guy is having with another woman. He knows that it's wrong because his girlfriend looks after him, is good to him and loves him unconditionally, but he doesn't get the satisfaction from her

Stormgirl's intergpretation is the obvious one of course, and the first to come to mind when hearing the song. But when I saw the videocip for this song I was surprised to discover he is actually talking about music/guitar! The clip shows him running for most of the song and at the end you think he'll find the girl but no, he stops running, picks his guitar from the ground and starts playing! If you think about it it makes sense, a lot of musicians think of their music as their "other" lover and approach the playing of an instrument as making love.

This song is all about his woman and his guitar. I think its all about having an escape from his reality. He loves his woman more than anything but when he needs a escape he goes and plays his guitar because its easy for him and it sooths and comforts him. Its brilliant of him to have kind of a double meaning to this song though!

Okay but a lot of video clips are irrelevant to the meaning of the song. I think as well that it must be about an affair. How do you explain "it's so damn easy making love to you"? Metaphorically, sure it would work...

Cheating on a woman... escape from reality to music... who can say. But those would be literal interpretations and as others have pointed out, making love to a guitar in a literal sense would be interesting.

It could also be that both literally and symbolically, the "woman whose love never dies" and "is always true" is his "mother". It's a common saying that a mother never stops loving her children and the person in this song has identified that, nine times out of ten, a man can't love his mother back "her love is cold" to him, he can't feel it. What he needs is the healthy healing love of a lover to complete him.

He also paints the picture that the relationhsip between him and his mother is dysfunctional, the stereotypical reasons would be self explanatory: single mother abandoned... young man fills the emotional gap... something like that.

So throughout this song there is descriptions of a few different kinds of love, and the opposite, and myths about what is and isn't conditional love and what kills love; and desperation and complication - and real ife in general.

Just a great mid 80s pop rock song. While it wasn't cool to admit it then, Brian Adams first (or a least first big album) was a great one. Loved all the songs that made it to the radio from it.

I tend to see the song as @tall Andrew and @stormgirl do. The singer feels mildly guilty for cheating on his girlfriend/wife but not guilty enough to stop sleeping with the focus of the song or break things off in his current relationship.

I like what @MaryC says but I'm not really sure I see it as she does. I suspect that chasing after the guitar made for a more MTv friendly video. This was still the early days of MTv and I suspect they may have been more cautious as to what was put on.

At a solo acoustic show I was at in Alabama, Bryan said that this song was written with a friend who suggested they write something about someone having an affair, even though Bryan's idea was to write something completely different. I believe he wrote it for Blue Oyster Cult, who turned it down.

this song is so true many many years ago when i was just a young young 17 years old i fell hook line and sinker for an older guy who was married no judgement please. he would play back and forth with us both; when he wanted fun being a single man it was to me when he fancied security a hot meal and his kids back to her. this song was out at the time and was so true to me it killed me. that guy may have been a class one sob but he has always come true to me when i needed him in later years. had not seen him for years but he suddenly popped up and told me to get out when my late husband beat me so bad i was so downtrodden i would not even look up, when my mum died, when my dad died when i was homeless and had no money i will love him til my last breath

my mate told me to read this song, it fits her life rite now, and i kinda get what shes sayin...hmmm

I always thought the one lyric was 'doubt it ever change if she found out about you and I'----I love this song!
