Foster the People – Best Friend Lyrics 11 years ago
this song is about WRITER'S BLOCK. creativity is an artist's best friend. and in this song Mark Foster is saying his creativity is gone; that he has no words.

now let's jump into the lyrics.

"(When your best friend's all strung out)
You do everything you can
'Cause you're never gonna let it get 'em down
(When you find it all around)
Yeah, it comes in waves but it's hardest from the start"

first notice the line is "best friend's" not "best friends". with the apostrophe it means "when your best friend IS all strung out. giving evidence to the theme that "creativity is an artist's best friend". this stanza is saying that Mark, as an artist, his creativity is gone. he has no words. he has writer's block. the block comes "in waves" but he can't even start to write: "it's hardest from the start".

"Feelings sleeping in the field again
I can feel, I can feel, I can feel
It's beginning to end
Premonitions smiling in the dark
I can see, I can see, I can see
The story's starting to arc
It dries up"

this stanza shows his struggle with the block. his "feelings" (creativity) is "sleeping in the field again" (run out). "I can feel, I can feel, I can feel / It's beginning to end" meaning his writers block his coming to an end, but "Premonitions smiling in the dark". "premonitions" are strong feelings that something bad is about to come. he can feel the writer's block coming back. now just as he can see ("I can see, I can see, I can see") the words coming back to him his creativity is gone ("it dries up")

"I've been a spoken word
I've been a river bed
I've been a rabid force
And let it flow out from within
Sometimes it feels like I only dream in black and white
And color's so oh"

this stanza shows how sometimes he feels like he is words incarnate ("I've been a spoken word") and sometimes he feels like his river of creativity has dried up ("I've been a riverbed"). Now the rest of the stanza he seems to feel confident: "I've been a rabid force / And let it flow out from within". his creativity seems to flow from within. "Sometimes I feel like I only dream and black and white" he feels like everything is clear (black and white) and he's knows exactly just what to say.

"Waves in theta slipping into dreams
I can feel, I can feel, I can feel
The celestial beings
Wilted pleasures leave you with a breath
I can see, I can see, I can see
The beauty in the mess
It dries up"

(NOT "waits, and fed us)

this stanza his similar to the second one. showing how he's asleep and dreaming (the brain produces "theta waves" when it is drowsy). he can see the creativity but once he reaches out for it, it "dries up" again.

Lorde – Ribs Lyrics 11 years ago
this song is about growing up. she longs for how easy things were when she was younger.

"I want 'em back (I want 'em back)
The minds we had (the minds we had)
How all the thoughts (how all the thoughts)
Moved 'round our heads (moved 'round our heads)"

she is saying she wants back "the mind we had". she wants back the simple, innocent, minds of her youth.

"You're the only friend I need
Sharing beds like little kids
Laughing 'til our ribs get tough
But that will never be enough"

this stanza speaks to me. here she is reflecting on the way things were. they innocent little things that kids do: "sharing beds like little kids"
she longs for the ease and innocence of youth and is afraid of the road ahead:

"It feels so scary, getting old"
