The Chosen Lyrics
last night a moth came to my bed
and filled my tired, weary head
with horrid tales of you, i can't believe it's true
but then the lampshade smiled at me
it said 'believe,' it said 'believe.'
i want you to know it's nothing personal
first time i had sex, i was three
first time consenting, was thirteen
though you weren't there, you remind me of those hands
roses are red, violets are blue
if i'm schizophrenic, then i am too
whatever it takes to escape
i hope you understand why i'm forced to take your life in my hands
i want you to know, it's nothing personal
and though we've never met, i've seen your image in a million waking dreams
your eyes they call to me 'set me free.'
did i ever tell you, you look like my mother
she once left me in a supermarket
i promised myself that i'd never feel that way again
...did i ever tell you, you look like my dear old mother
i hope you understand why i'm forced to take my life in your name
i want you to know, it's nothing all the same
and though we've never met, i've seen your image in a million waking dreams
your eyes they call to me 'set me free.'

I think this song is about a man who is a paranoid schitzophrenic man who was abused by his mother. I think she was the one who raped him. She screwed his life up. He sees a woman that looks like his mother, she he thinks it's his job to rid the memories of his mother by killing her. Being "The Chosen One". He saying sorry to the woman, because he knows she isn't her mother, but she looks like her and it was unfortunate. He then later goes onto kill himself.
That's what I think anyway.
You forgot a line. "I want you to know, it's nothing personal" should be right after the line "It said 'believe', it said 'believe'" at the beginning of the first verse.
it sounds like you can relate?
voltaire's a person, not a group. :| and besides, i think it's a pretty, melancholic song, and really, i'm the only one who matters, right? ;)
Voltaire is too a group. Yeah, he writes the songs, sings, and plays guitar, but do you think he plays the cello, violin, drums, trumpet, and clarinet too? Nobody gives any credit to Gregor Kitzis (violin), without him, Voltaire wouldn't even be good.

Ugh "WhiteMagic" you stupid insensitive illearned jerk...
Voltaire is a singular male(mostly) human. Not a group.
"First time I had sex, i was three First tiem iwas consenting, i was thirteen"
He is saying he wsa RAPED..or Molested. he consented to doingit when he was 13, but when he was 3 it wasn't his idea. The song has a general tone of a screwed up childhood. You should'nt be so insensitive, you bloody moron.
Indeed. Ah... my ex used to sing along with this song all the time and even reading the lyrics nearly makes me cry and I remember the anger and the pain. I do wish I could listen to this song without remembering him as it is quite a good song. Uhm, never mind. Heh.
This song takes on the tone of someone delusional. "being the chosen" ... delusions of importance. He mentions schizophrenia, which really sets the mood to the whole song, I think. He portrays the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia quite well. I was just reading about it for a school-project when I first heard the song (just about half an hour ago, actually) ... I think it was a very strange coincedence indeed.
But other than singing from the perspective of a paranoid schizophrenic, I can't find any deeper meaning. I find Voltaire is pretty abstract though ... and perhaps his songs aren't overly meaningful, but they are tres interesting nontheless. And pretty too.
There were theories circulating about this that this song was written about the fan who tried to kill Bjork with an acid bomb in 1996 (Voltaire likely would have known about this, being a Bjork fan). Other people say it's partly autobiographical.
It's musically a stunning song, but the lines "first time I had sex, I was three" and "she once left me in a supermaket store" give me such visceral reactions that I can't think about the lyrics, usually. Fortunately, the cello part is a little concert on its own, and I think it's probably once of his best songs, even if it is hard to listen to.
"first time i had sex i was three first time consenting was thirteen." T.M.I/akward turtle!
"first time i had sex i was three first time consenting was thirteen."-hes referring to being molested as a child obviously...if you dont know that then ur a fukin dipshit >.
