The Glow Pt. 2 Lyrics
I took my shirt off in the yard.
No one saw that the skin on my shoulders was golden.
Now it's not.
My shirt's back on.
I forgot my songs.
The glow is gone.
My gliding body stopped.
I could not get through September without a battle.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging
but I heard my own breath
and I had to face that I'm still living.
I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings.
I'm not dead. There's no end. My face is red.
My blood flows harshly.
My heart beats loudly.
My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant.
There's no end.
No one saw that the skin on my shoulders was golden.
Now it's not.
My shirt's back on.
I forgot my songs.
The glow is gone.
My gliding body stopped.
I could not get through September without a battle.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging
but I heard my own breath
and I had to face that I'm still living.
I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings.
I'm not dead. There's no end. My face is red.
My blood flows harshly.
My heart beats loudly.
My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant.
There's no end.

This is a song about attemped suicide. More specifically, it is about a failed attempt to hang oneself.
The imagery is very clear, and very amazing.
"I faced death I went in with my arms swinging But I heard my own breath I had to face that I'm still living"
He jumped off ("facing death") of whatever it is that was keeping him up, swinging (his "arms swinging").
But he's still breathing. He's still alive, and it forces him to contemplate. Death by hanging is either over very quickly (with the snapping of the neck) or very, very slowly (by asphyxiation, which can take hours).
"I'm not dead There's no end My face is red My blood flows harshly"
He is slowly suffering from the effects of asphyxiation ("face is red," "blood flows harshly"). He thinks desperately about his current situation.
"My heart beats loudly My chest still draws breath I hold it"
Do you know the feeling whenever you hold your breath? Hearing your own heartbeats? He realizes that, awfully, he is still breathing, and he longs no longer to do so.
He wants to hold his breath to make himself asphyxiate faster.
But there is no end.

this song is amazing. i had a long string of particularly difficult time recently that i almost didn't make it through, and i think this song embodies it perfectly. the truths in it are so profound to me.
I think it's "I'm still flesh, I hold onto 'awful' feelings."
it's not "i'm boiling", sorry... it's "i'm buoyant", at least originally, but you can hear it the way you want to hear it, that's always for the best. perhaps you've got another version. doesn't really matter, cause it's great anyway. i love this song too, it completely embraces my feelings. watching phil elvrum doing it live was absolutely wonderful. oh man i'm so glad i met that guy, even just for once. really amazing man.
this song is SO beautiful. it is impossible to listen to the microphones with out having headphones on, i just want to smash them into my soul. this is going to be in a movie someday, mine, just watch.
as soon as the microphones start playing, shivers start running mad dash laps up and down my spine. incredible. Mirah is quality too.
This song is about depression and the overwhleming darkness it puts you in. It kills the glow, the life force, the soul, the self. The Glow he was feeling in part 1 is dead and gone and he is left with the sad acknowledgement that he is still alive. Beautiful song.
isn't there a referenced reaction to 9-11 in this song?
it sounded like a 9-11 reference to me, but it can't be as the album was recorded between May 2000 and March 2001. the pitchfork review for it actually came out on September 11, 2001
this is one of the most honest works i've ever heard.
