The Thunderclouds broke up.
The rain dried up, the lightning let up, the clacking shutters just shut up.
There's no black or white, no change in the light, no night, no golden sun.
The sound of cars, the smell of bars, the awful feeling of electric heat.
Under fluorescent lights, there's sacrifice. There's hard feelings, there's pointless waste.
I want wind to blow my clothes off me, sweep me off my feet, take me up and not bring me back.
Where I can see days pass by me, I have no human head to hold in grief.
But there's no hope for me, I've been set "free", there's no breeze, there's no ship on my sea.

General Commenthaha i like the porn mention, but i think its actually "there's hard feelings, there's pointless waste"
wonderful song, phil is absolutely one of my favorite song writers. it seems like putting direct meaning to any one song is kind of pointless, everything is so unified and every record is almost a song of its own. it seems more about getting the feeling across in general, like a movie.

General CommentOk, here's what I think.
the 1st stanza has a lot if imagery that talks about the peace at the end of a powerful storm.
the 2nd-4th stanzas makes me think of a grey, industrial-ish city or a place with no sunlight and joy.
The wind is a force of nature, it is clean and fresh and he wants it to blow.
in the last stanzas the wind frees him from his humanly social obligations, kind of like a return to nature.
probably wrong, but its one way to think about it.

General Commentthis type of music isn't easily accepted by the mainstream. the crazy noisy drums, phil's heart wrenching melancholic voice, noisy indie stuff that MTV just couldn't handle.

General CommentIt is.."There's hard feelings, there's pointless waste" And the "oh ah" part is actually "I want wind to blow" if you listen reeeeeaally carefully.

General CommentThis is probably my ultimate favorite song of all time. I never thought I could really say that about any song until I heard this one. And it never gets old. The rythm, whispered vocals, and the wet atmosphere that the music portrays. It's all just perfect.

General CommentIf you listen to the song "Phil Elvrum's will," at the end, he says "I want wind" and strums the first few chords for this song, a little differently. Also, in the beginning of "The Sun" on the Mt. Eerie album, I want Wind to Blow is playing (or being played) faintly in the background.

I love it when artists have common threads and recurring concepts/ideas evident throughout their art. It's like, the ideas gain special significance through their repition. Also, seeing the same idea in a different context, or song, gives it a fresh perspective.

It seems the I want wind to blow concept is an idyllic one, because that's what phil, well, wants. It's used here as an preferred atmosphere over the city, but it might mean death, because he mentions it as one of the things he wants when dead, in "Phil elvrums will." Also, "the Sun" is described as "in which the stroy begins, where you are born and run away from death up the mountain in fear and are watched by a ball of fire." The blowing wind, a.k.a. this song in the intro of "the sun" might be the feeling of death he speaks of running away from.

One more thing. In this song, he says "Sweep me off my feet
Take me up and bring me back
Oh, where I can see the waves pass by me."

In "phil elvrum's will," he says, speaking of his friends: "and go all the time to the beach to picture my face."
Therefore, I think this song is about death.

General CommentI just have a few corrections to the lyrics, I read them more like this:

    The thunder clouds broke up,
    And the rain dried up,
    The lightning let up,
The clacking shutters just shut up.

    There’s no black or white,
    No change in the light,
    No night, no golden sun.

    The sound of cars,
    The smell of bars,
The awful feeling of electric heat.
    And the fluorescent lights,

    There’s sacrifice,
    There’s hard feelings,
    There’s pointless waste.

    I want wind to blow

    My clothes off me,
    Sweep me off my feet,
Take me up and bring me back.
    Oh, where I can see
    Days pass by me,
I have no head to hold in grief.

    There’s no hope for me,
    I’ve been set free.
    There’s no breeze,
There’s no ship on my sea.
