Slide Show Lyrics

Today was the day
For dancing and for singing
The birds in the trees and all
The bells are ringing
The sun is in the sky
Is bright as bright second sight
Is bright oh god I hope I'm alright
Cause I'm gonna cry

Hold on, hold on
Slow down, slow down
You're out of touch
Out of touch

'Cause there is no design for life
There's no devil's haircut in my mind
There is not a wonder wall to climb
Or step around
But there is a slide show and it's so slow
Flashing through my mind
Today was the day
But only for the first time

Hold on, hold on
Slow down, slow down
You're out of touch
Out of touch

'Cause there is no design for life
There is no devil's haircut in your mind
There is not a wonder wall to climb
Or step around
But there is a sideshow and it's so slow
Flashing through my mind
Today is the day
But only for the first time
I hope it's not the last time

Stellar song from "The Man Who" album. Fran wakes up and realizes he is not just a piece in the puzzle, he is the puzzle. He realizes the solution to the puzzle will not come from a moment of instant pleasure provided by Beck or Oasis, but by dancing and singing under a sunny sky. To me this song means that the possibilities of the future are more than the image we have created in the past - people must learn to disassociate themselves from who they have become, and instead choose to be who they want to be. To find your true self there is nothing greater than self-reflection and living each moment with passion.

I would like to believe that, but do you have any evidence/quotes that support that?

This song is about how hearing different songs i.e. a design for life (manic street preachers), wonderwall (oasis) etc, reminds Fran of various points in his life. He is saying that the memories he has when hearing these songs are what counts more than the actual song itself. Hence the chorus - there is no................but there is a slide show. The genius behind this song is it's simplicity. It's something eveyone can relate to.

this song is really cool. they performed it live last weekend when i saw them. i really like the way they mention other artists songs (Oasis, Beck and the Manics).

ironically, this is the second time on the "The Man Who" you will hear a reference to "Wonderwall". in the song "Writing to Reach You", as well as using practically the same riff, the lyrics also state "..and what's a 'wonderwall' anyway?".

Firstly, the lyrics are wrong. It's "There is no desire for life", not design.

I think it's about depression. The first verse shows how everything is supposed to be, happy & joyful etc. Then it goes on to say how he is about to cry, showing that he isn't happy himself.

No desire for life is fairly self explanatory, saying that there's no wonderwall to climb or step around is all about the despair that depression sufferers feel, and the slow slideshow is how he feels about the life he lives. Bland and meaningless.

I think this song is about depression. The first verse makes me think this because it starts off all sunny and then says "cause i'm gonna cry" showing that although there is nothing wrong in the world he's still not happy with life. I think it's about not having a direction in life and the slideshow is just his life - the present - floating past him and not having much of an impact.

NSiky - it is 'design for life'. Wonderwall and Devil's Haircut, as I'm sure you know, are two songs (by oasis and beck respectively) and design for life is a manic street preachers song, so it fits very well.

I don't know about you lot, but I think this is an optimistic song. He is crying because he is so happy, he is just questioning if that is normal. The slide show are those happy images and great moments that stay with you forever. That is why at the end Fran says "I hope it's not the last time". It is his first moment of joy, taking pleasure in the mundane things not always hoping and waiting for one defining moment (i.e. a big hit song) or what they describe.

Awesome song and album too!! such easy listening
