don't say morning's come
don't say it's up to me
if I could take 25 minutes
out of the record books.
sugar
he brings me sugar
bobby's collecting bees
and hammers, he used one on me.
cold war with little boys
get in with a bubble gum trade...
and...
sugar, bring me sugar
and all the robins bring,
bring me many things
but...
sugar, oh sugar
he brings me sugar
as far as I can tell
i've been gone for miles now
and you know, and I know
i don't know me very well
and I know, and you know
if they found me out.
sugar
he brings me sugar
and all the robins bring
they bring me many things but...
sugar
he brings me sugar
and all the robins bring
they bring many things but...
sugar
don't say it's up to me
if I could take 25 minutes
out of the record books.

and hammers, he used one on me.
cold war with little boys

sugar, bring me sugar
and all the robins bring,

but...

as far as I can tell

and all the robins bring

I know what Tori says about this song ...she has a tendency to be very vague and only give pieces of her inspiration. What she does not tell you is that her love interest in the song did not remember how many sugars because he was gay!She had been in love with a closet case that was working on her road crew. That is where she gets the line "sweet boy when they find you out, tell me what you think they'll do, when they find you gota little in you, when they find out...your just a pussy, my sweet boy my sugar." It is also about a close friends addiction to cocaine.
"So, I had to get this song together in about 2 hours. And this boy really pissed me off, because I had a crush on him, right...and he'd been making tea for me for nine months. And so, the whole thing is...he would sit there and ask me... Now if you're making tea for a girl, right, for 9 months don't you think, guys. I mean help me out here. Your noodle, it can hold a lot of information, right? But don't you think, you can remember how many sugars a girl takes in her tea after 9 months!" [Tori Amos, US Hey Jupiter single, intro to song]
I like the live version on Venus way better than the studio one. It has so much more fire to it. Hell most the songs on the second disk of Venus are better than the originals
Agreed. Tori really wrenches the guts out of a song live, and the live version is also mixed down properly so it doesn't have those annoying sibilant hi-hats from the original B-side recording.

@King of Some Island Agreed. That Sound check version from TVAB is like lightning and thunder! Way better than the original.

It's not a nice take on it but couldn't this be talking about a guy who can't stay in touch with his sexuality in his own thoughts because the first man who touched him shouldn't have? It just read that way to me as I read toris interview comments. Asif the guy wanted the love when he was young but the sugar, the not really love , was from someone older getting in to 'the bubblegum trade'. His sexuality got tarnished and now he cant go forward and he can't go back. The addiction is to sugar and only half knowing perhaps.
This was always one of my fave b-sides of hers. She almost always plays it in concert, just like "Me and a Gun"
I've tried not to focus on the text, but if I follow the music line i get this, deepish, true, beautiful but sick relationship that you can't give up for the joy it brings you of being different from all the rest of the world. In spite of the fact that the parts don't really comunicate, he still brings her sugar, which can be sweeter than anything else. Call it chemistry, or match of bodies, call it however you want, it's more intense than anything else and makes the most beautiful chorus ever "sugar... bring me sugar"
Wikipedia says that the line "sugar..he brings me sugar" was inspired by Freddie Mercury!
i think these lyrics are missing a part. about the pussy-cat haha
it really goes something like this:
don't say morning's come don't say it's up to me if I could take 25 minutes out of the record books.

bobby's collecting bees and hammers, he used one on me. cold war with little boys get in with a bubble gum trade...
and... sugar, bring me sugar and all the robins bring, bring me many things but... sugar, oh sugar
he brings me sugar as far as I can tell i've been gone for miles now
and you know, and I know i don't know me very well
and I know, and you know if they found me out.
"You just watch just watch what they do sweet boy when they find you out tell me what you think they’ll do when you finally found a little __? tell me what you think they’ll do when they find you out when they find you out find out youre just a “wussy” my sweet boy"
sugar he brings me sugar and all the robins bring they bring me many things but...
sugar he brings me sugar and all the robins bring they bring many things but...

For the sentence with the missing lyric, I think it goes...

When they found you got a little in 'here'.
When they found you got a little in 'here'.
Also, Tori is very poetic which allows any person listening to the lyrics to perhaps connect them with a situation in their live, in some way. Maybe. I personally think Sugar represents something that you want but can't have. Could mean a lot of things.

to fill in the blank, she's saying 'here'.
