How Does It Make You Feel?

The song, in its simplest terms, is about to lovers that are separated by a barrier. It doesn't matter what that barrier is: geography, time, worlds, human & computer, etc. It touches on the universal insight that we have all been apart from someone we love and the conversation the robot is having really describes what that longing feels like, perhaps that is why it is so compelling.

For someone who has a long track record of long distance relationships, this song has a special place in my heart.

I dont even see the song as being from the perspective of a robot. I see it like someone speaking with a mechanical larynx. This is especially clear to me when the female voice answers "Well, I really think you should quit smoking" as if he's speaking through the device because of cancer caused by cigarette smoking. A Little dark humour twist on behalf of Air perhaps to lighten the dark romantic mood of the song. This is what I thought it sounded like.

their pink floyd influence is strong in the chorus

I doubt this song is actually about a robot, and the fact that the chorus was left unwarped supports this to me. However, I think this song is about two people who are from completely different "worlds", and the robotic voices are a play on that It's about someone who's lived a wreckless life (hence, smoker) who loves an innocent... two different walks of life

the lyrics are very beautiful. i've never heard a song like this; it's weird, but in a good way.

It's so weird... a talking computer in the video. But it really gets to me. Makes you wonder if machines have feelings like we do. ;) Anywayzzz: Great song!

this song is gorgeous. it opens up my soul and spills the contents all over the place. i love the chorus, it's so... otherworldly. also, the lyrics themselves are amazing. =P

First off, that ending literally made me chuckle out loud the first time I heard it. But in a way, it has alot of meaning. Sure, the girl robot understands what the other is saying, but she still wants him around for a long time, so quite smoking, please don't get sick and die on me. This has a lot of meaning for me. My best friend and I are always afriad of losing eachother, that we secretly will go away someday, or taht we dont care as muchas we say. We're both so afraid of losing eachother. Wo should just stop that, stop being silly. He and I will be friends forever. I'm having a convo wiht him right now, adn I told him about this song. I hope he feels what i do. Larry, if you're out there, you're the best. I love you buddy.

I watched Stanley Kubrick's "2001 Space Odissey" recently and the whole idea of artificial intelligence and their emotions reminded me so much of this song. I can't quite remember, but i think that certain sequences of the movie (that red lense or whatever that is...) correspondes with the video for this song. Almost as if it was written for HAL 9000. However, I love the song! What I love about Air is how well they menage to guide their songs. Just in the moment when you think they'll slip into some sort of a cliche, into something pathetic they menage to escape that trap they get back to the right track and just assure you that they know exactly what they are doing!

This song asks a very simple question - How Does it Make You Feel?

Quite simply, it makes me feel as though I'm not so different from the robot. I hear in this song, and I remember the things I have said to those I love. Those words are not so different from the words the computer in this song speaks. The exception is that the robot in this song breaks from believable human dialog occasionally with awkward, presumably computer-generated dialog such as "You are the most beautiful entity that I've ever dreamed of". However, the meaning of these words is strikingly similar to that which an actual human being might come up with. "So, how does this make you feel?"

I think that the music in this song is some of the best that Air has put forth. It is very similar to the Virgin Suicides medley in terms of melody, structure, and tone, yet the overall content of the song is provoking enough to justify its placement on the album.

To me, the use of robotic voice just seems like a change in sound rather than a change in whom may be speaking them.

This sounds similar to how one person may pour their heart out to another. After years of love, to the point of worship, you may have a similar kind of dialog prepared for the person in question. Only to be answered with something as trivial as the ending reply. It's not undheard of.

Rather sad, especially knowing this possibly unhealthy extent of love myself.
