Wonderful Life Lyrics

Here I go, out to sea again
The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air
Gulls in the sky and in my blue eye
You know it feels unfair
There's magic everywhere
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine

No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life

The sun's in your eyes, the heat is in your hair
They seem to hate you
Because you're there
And I need a friend, oh I need a friend
To make me happy
Not stand here on my own
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine

No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life

I need a friend, oh I need a friend
To make me happy, no so alone
Look at me here
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine

No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life...

I think this is about feeling so alone and desperately unhappy, that you literally feel you are '"alone out to sea'" with nobody steering your boat. You're out in the sunshine, on a beautiful day, and you feel that even the 'sun and heat hate you". You feel your dreams 'hang in the air' because you don't know if you'll ever see them come to fruition. Your 'blue = sad eye'. sees magic that isn't felt. I think that even though this is a desperately sad song, the writer of it, seems to write/sing that it's a wonderful life over and over as almost a mantra, as if to remind himself, or even to comment on the irony of his mood. I also wonder whether the writer is also referring to an old movie, by the same name, about a man who didn't realise what he had. This is such a beautiful song. It's very clever. Sad lyrics teamed with tropical beach carefree sounding music. Another hint of intentional irony perhaps, that all may not be what it outwardly seems.

My Interpretation

@thelydstar He wrote the song when he was sitting in the heliport waiting to go offshore. That's what he meant by singing.."Here I go out to sea again"

This is pretty much how I interpret this song. It's someone who recognises the beauty all around, but doesn't feel able to appreciate it, due to his own loneliness. However, it's not a song without hope that a better future lies ahead. In that respect it's not a song full of despair.

@thelydstar What a beautiful interpretation! It brought me to a better understanding of the song. I also like the thought that there's hope in it. Hope to cross the bridge between just seeing and eventually feeling that magic and wonderful life.

Not so happy... the song is full of irony

To me it's more sad lyrics/uplifting music. In any case, I agree with this being an ironic song. Life can be beautiful, the day can be full of sunshine and nice, but you will remain alone and lonely. Having someone there to comfort you might be all that matters in the end.

Morrissey wrote the song on an Arbroath beach whilst on one of his train journey excursions. Although he's from the Gallowglass and has brown eyes he wrote 'blue eyes' because he was so sad. The song was written as he felt so suicidal. How he gave it to 'Black' I don't know. He asked for no rights when he gave it to them

Morrissey had absolutely nothing to do with "Wonderful Life". It was written solely by Black.

Erm Morrissey didn't write the track? ha ha

The song is absolutely beautiful, but the chords used are very sad chords (a beautiful sad sequence - always loved it!) and the lyrics have always been so very... I dunno really. Upset?

Amazing song though.

This is definitely an ironic song. There are many hints. also. Have you seen its video?

I thknk the the first verse is about someone finally getting back into a life for themselves after ... (a bad romance, breakup or such) and now being able to 'stand straight again'.

The second verse is about that person (later) being ready to get into a relationship again, neding a friend.

So n both cases I think this about a positive thing. first: freedom, no longer being dependent, despondent etc, secondly abel to get back into a ligfe shared with someone else
