I Need You Lyrics

We used to laugh, we used to cry
We used to bow our heads then, wonder why
And now you're gone, I guess I'll carry on
And make the best of what you've left to me
Left to me, left to me

I need you like the flower needs the rain
You know I need you, guess I'll start it all again
You know I need you like the winter needs the spring
You know I need you, I need you

And every day, I'd laugh the hours away
Just knowing you were thinking of me
And then it came that I was put to blame
For every story told about me
About me, about me

I need you like the flower needs the rain
You know I need you, guess I'll start it all again
You know I need you, I need you
I need you like the winter needs the spring
You know I need you, guess I'll start it all again
You know I need you, I need you

I need you like the flower needs the rain
You know I need you, guess I'll start it all again
You know I need you, I need you
I need you like the winter needs the spring
You know I need you, guess I'll start it all again
You know I need you, I need you ...

One of the greatest love songs of all time. Never even uses the word love in the lyrics and u can tell it's a love song.

@Salohcin8 "I need you" well, obviously it's a love song haha

How can a song be so terribly romantic, and yet so cool?

Great song, but does anyone know what "guess I'll start it all again" means?

@tasty that although they feel heart broken because of the situation, they'll have to give love another try

@tasty I take it as a break-up song, thus he has to start over with what she left to him. "Now you're gone..." they passed that point where love conquers all, and yet he still needs her. Sad ... but true in many relationships gone sour.

I think this work has impact for me because the singer seems sad and sober having lost the affection of someone (and a situation) he still longs for, but at the same time is resigned to the fact shes gone. He feels terrible but now he must somehow pick himself up and continue..

My Interpretation

@craig11535 have to agree with your interpretation. The second verse is a little confusing as it jumps back in time, but sort of lends itself to being in the present too.

Words can’t describe how I love this song! Never get tired of hearing it when it comes on the radio, it’s the kind of song that’s always welcome whenever it comes on. Some songs, even classics, no matter how good or famous they are you still may not be in the mood to listen to, nothing against them of course but this song I always am up for listening to.

Yeah it’s obvious it’s a love song of some sort but the sentiments expressed can be for family or a friend(s) and a girl, a love. Its critics make fun of it for being sappy & because of the lyrics but to me there’s nothing sappy or wrong with the lyrics.

It’s an interesting piece this song is. The singer ranges from somberness, to self reflection & maybe even a religious experience. For example the beginning & yes I love how this song begins, “We used to laugh, we used to cry, we used to bow our heads & wonder why”. That speaks of humility & reflection, possibly an epiphany when you express such sentiments. The singer & whoever he’s with are humbled, respectful of a profound experience. When you bow your head & “wonder why” you most likely do that when you pray. That first set of lyrics is almost like he’s coming from a funeral. It has that tone to it. The lyrics “I guess I’ll make the most of what you left to me” bears out that opinion in my point of view.

It ranges also from sentimentality “I need you, like the flower needs the rain”. To melancholy, “And everyday I’d laugh the hours away, just knowing you were thinking of me” To pain, regret & self doubt “And then it came, I was put to blame, for every story told about me. About me, about me”. Those are some serious extremes there in tone & lyrics. Wonder if he ever explained what that meant, if he did I never read it. Then there’s the hopeful “Guess I’ll start it all again” which is simply saying that he’d do it all over again if he could.

Yes I know the singer said it was about a girl he knew but it can be interpreted like I said about friends, family, remembering the past & even losing someone, about death, the lyrics DO fit that option you know.

Great song, great songwriting, it’s my favorite song off of the album.
