Finally Free Lyrics

[Present]
The Hypnotherapist:
"You are once again surrounded by a brilliant white light.
Allow the light to lead you away from your past and into this lifetime.
As the light dissipates you will slowly fade back into consciousness remembering all you have learned. When I tell you to open your eyes you will return to the present, feeling peaceful and refreshed.
Open your eyes, Nicholas."
[Past]
The Miracle:
Friday evening
The blood still on my hands
To think that she would leave me now
For that ungrateful man
Sole survivor
No witness to the crime
I must act fast to cover up
I think that there's still time

He'd seem hopeless and lost with this note
They'll buy into the words that I wrote
"This feeling inside me
Finally found my love, I've finally broke free
No longer torn in two
I'd take my own life before losing you"

Victoria:
Feeling good this Friday afternoon
I ran into Julian
Said we'd get together soon
He's always had my heart
He needs to know
I'll break free of the Miracle
It's time for him to go
This feeling inside me
Finally found my love, I've finally broke free
No longer torn in two
He'd kill his brother if he only knew
Their love renewed
They'd rendezvous
In a pathway out of view
They thought no one knew
Then came a shot out of the night

The Miracle:
"Open your eyes, Victoria."

[Towards the end of the shrieks]
[and gun fire during the fight.]

The Sleeper:
One last time
We'll lay down today
One last time
Until we fade away
One last time
We'll lay down today
One last time
We fade away
As their bodies lie still
And the ending draws near
Spirits rise through the air
All their fears disappear, it all becomes clear
A blinding light comes into view
An old soul exchanged for a new
A familiar voice comes shining through...

[Present]
Nicholas:
This feeling inside me
Finally found my life, I'm finally free
No longer torn in two
I learned about my life by living through you
This feeling inside me
Finally found my life, I'm finally free
No longer torn in two
Living my own life by learning from you
We'll meet again my friend someday soon...
[Samples from TV news broadcasts.]
"...news in London, France, Russia and Italy have deleted their lead story, all anticipating the outcome of the man considered to be a member of American nobility."
"And as you can imagine, as the skies have grown darker here over Washington, the mood has grown darker as well and people here are beginning to resign themselves to the possibility that they are witnessing yet another tragedy in a long string of misfortunes."
"Reaction from everywhere, from Washington and certainly from around the world has cast..."
The Hypnotherapist:
"Open your eyes, Nicholas."
Nicholas:
"Aaah!"

The strongest part of this song is again repetition of lines by different characters, in this case the; "This feeling inside me Finally found my love, I've finally broke free No longer torn in two..."

When the Miracle sings them, they are very sinister, as he is planting the words on the dead Sleeper. Then Victorias part shows how she has finaly found her true feelings and some degree of peace with her decision, although the next line ("He'd kill his brother if he only knew") shows that there is still a fear and sense that things may not work out.

Finaly, Nick uses the words to show how he has also found a peace and comfort in the story, and that he has come to terms with the truth. The second time he sings the words, with the backing vocals, I think represents the fact that he has intergrated Victorias life into his own.

If you listen to the music itself, there are some strong key changes, major to minor, which come at important parts. For example, the first comes as Nick drives off at the start and is followed by the Miracles part in a rather sinister key (apart from the part where he is writing the note, which is still very twisted). Then it changes to upbeat major for Victorias part. Another shift comes with the death scene (after the line "shot out of the night", and then back to major in time for Nick to start singing. All very appropriate.

But then there is one last change that I never understood; on the line, "We'll meet again my friend someday soon... "

My idea of this one is that it is a premonition of his own death, at the hands of the Hypnotherapist. He doesn't know what is going on, but part of the idea I had about the story is that Victoria is actualy trying to warn him through showing him the truth. He has accepted the idea that death is not the end, but missed the idea that it may come sooner than he thought.

I am still wondering how the news broadcast fits in. It is one point in the whole well crafted story that seems out of place.

Some people have it, but I want to specify exactly what happened.

A man named Nicholas is visiting a hypnotherapist because he keeps having a recurring dream where he vividly enters another person's life, which is preventing him from living his own life.

He learns the other life is that of a girl named Victoria, and that Nicholas is the reincarnation of Victoria, which is why he's the one she's haunting. He also learns that she was murdered, and won't leave him alone until he finds out the truth of her murder.

Nicholas goes to a house and meets an old man who tells him what he knows of the murder, then tells him he'll find out the truth in time. So Nicholas finds a newspaper article that explains the current story of what happened.

He learns Victoria was seeing a man named Julian, who fell into a dark place after becoming addicted to alcohol and gambling, and breaks up with him. Then one night someone heard a struggle and ran over to find Julian laying over Victoria's body, and a note that's allegedly from Julian saying that he can't live without her. So it's assumed that Julian killed Victoria.

Nicholas then goes back into Victoria's memories again and finds out after breaking up with Julian, his brother Edward began to comfort her, and quickly fell in love with her. So behind his brothers back they began their secret affair.

Nicholas finally realizes this and the final memory is revealed to him. He learns Julian told Victoria he was working to get over his vices because he loved her too much and wanted to get back together. They agree to meet up, and since Victoria had always loved Julian she plans to break it off with his brother Edward. They thought the meeting was a secret, but Edward shows up. He's angry Victoria left him for Julian, and gets into a fight with Julian, then pulls out a gun and shoots him. Victoria starts to scream so he tells her "Open your eyes Victoria."

He then kills her and writes the suicide note they found on Julian then leaves. Now that Nicholas knows the truth he returns home. He starts relaxing and getting comfortable, saying how he learned so much and is happy to be living his own life again, when the Hypnotherapist comes in. The Hypnotherapist is Edward's reincarnation, and does murder Nicholas in order to continue the cycle.

I know it's lengthy, but that's the whole album summarized for you/

Also...we learn that the miracle is the "witness" in "Beyond this life"....he killed the sleeper and victoria and made it look like the sleeper pulled a homicide/suicide. Great album, great story

Exactly, Metallican41. Most people never notice that "the witness" was the actual killer. This song is the key to understanding the Metropolis 2000 story.

This song is seriously amazing... the hypnotherapy just lures you in with Petrucci (enough said) the ending is a tad confusing though, i came on this site because i was confused about the ending, how did you come to the hypnotherapist reincarnate conclusion?

Cover art for Finally Free lyrics by Dream Theater

how i made the conclusion was that when the miracle (edward) shoots victoria and the sleeper (julian), it was the same voice as the hypnotherapist. what sealed it was when the hypno said "open your eyes, nicholas.", just like the miracle said with victoria. it's kind of confusing. this song is fantastic though.

The news broadcast thing is just something Nicholas watches on TV, I believe.

Cover art for Finally Free lyrics by Dream Theater

The news broadcast is audio from a television broadcast played the day JFK was assassinated. This doesn't immediately make sense, since it moves the story from 1928-ish into the 60's, which seems disjunct with the rest of the story. My impresion was that the story is set in contemporary times, jumping between now and 70 years ago... any thoughts on how that meshes with a news broadcast from halfway between the two times?
