Undun Lyrics

She’s come Undun.
She didn’t know what she was headed for,
And when I found what she was headed for,
It was too late.

She’s come Undun.
She found a mountain that was far too high,
And when she found out she couldn’t fly,
It was too late.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun.

She’s come Undun.
She wanted truth but all she got was lies.
Came the time to realize,
And it was too late.

She’s come Undun.
She didn’t know what she was headed for,
And when I found what she was headed for,
Mama it was too late.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun
She’s come Undun.

Too many mountains and not enough stairs to climb.
Too many churches and not enough truth.
Too many people and not enough eyes to see.
Too many lives to lead and not enough time.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun.
She’s come Undun.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun.
She’s come Undun.

She didn’t know what she was headed for,
And when I found what she was headed for,
It was too late.
She’s come Undun.
She found a mountain that was far too high,
And when she found out she couldn’t fly,
Mama it was too late.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun.
She’s come Undun.

I read somewhere that this was about a bad acid trip

I have thought for years that this was a song sung to the mother of a girl who leaps to her death. The song is sung in the character of the girls brother, who is seeking forgiveness from the mother, for having failed in his duties as protector of the sister, as he shares his anguish at her loss. The family in question is very religious and the "sun" she has lost, is actually the Jesus figure, the "son" of God. The break with the references to too many churches and not enough truth, was what led me to those associations. Years later finding out about Backman's being raised in a devout Mormon home, tended to confirm what I had thought. He was certainly not above including religious ideas into his pop songs. Ask any Mormon about the "Share The Land" lyrics. A great jazzy rock song, that swings and features one of the few scat singing appearances in rock/pop. I always wondered what Blood, Sweat and Tears could have done with this song, it seems to call out for a nice horn arrangement.

@tubeornot2b no it’s not about that at all, according to the band Guess Who. That’s just your interpretation which says more about you than about the song’s original intent. It’s about a girl who had a reaction to LSD at a party and ended up in a coma.

In my own way, I thought it was about a superstar film or stage actress - Too many people and not enough eyes to see (her pain), to many churches, but not enough truth, (places that promise answers and help, but no). She found a mountain that was far too high...she couldn't fly (she found fame but couldn't handle it) Too many lives to lead (her own and the lives she's expected to front). Too many mountains and not enough stairs...(too many expectations but with short comings). That's my .02 cents.

@hillflyer almost - SUN in drug culture was code for Heroin. She died from an overdose. "house of the rising sun" is a heroin den, in its most common parlance. Eric Clapton suffered Heroin addiction, kind of a thing, so he'd know. Plus, a friend was a prosecutor, he clued me in to the translation for this and other drug words, I'm a geek and have no personal experience.

@hillflyer Art Linkletter's daughter who jumped out a window on bad acid trip.

A man, possibly a brother or a cousin or a platonic friend, is sad because he warned his sister or cousin or friend that the man she had the sparks for was bad news, and she wouldn't listen, and now the lady has a broken heart and possibly a messed-up life

No, it's spelled Undun. DUH.

Who knows what it means? Burton Cummings plays the flute brilliantly, and he has repeatedly stated "this is the best song that Randy Bachman ever wrote. I was privileged to sing it." So Randy wrote the ballads? No wonder the Guess Who started floundering when he left/was fired.

There is an awesome version on Youtube.

@donutbandit I wouldn’t call this song a ballad & although Randy wrote this song alone most of the Guess Who’s music was written by Randy AND Burton. After Randy left Kurt Winter joined the band & he & Burton wrote A LOT of good songs. Apparently you didn’t listen to them after Randy left because they still had several great songs afterwards & the band became a bit more hard rocking. I loved a LOT of their stuff just as much if not more after Randy left.

I have heard this song many times - love it by the way - but I had never thought much about it. I was listening to it recently, and in particular, the lines:

"She found a mountain that was far too high, And when she found out she couldn’t fly, It was too late."

After hearing those lines again, I immediately thought of suicide. The notion of an individual heading down this dark, lonely path is reflected in the line "it was too late," with death being the end. No chance left to save "her."
