I have thought for years that this was a song sung to the mother of a girl who leaps to her death. The song is sung in the character of the girls brother, who is seeking forgiveness from the mother, for having failed in his duties as protector of the sister, as he shares his anguish at her loss. The family in question is very religious and the "sun" she has lost, is actually the Jesus figure, the "son" of God. The break with the references to too many churches and not enough truth, was what led me to those associations. Years later finding out about Backman's being raised in a devout Mormon home, tended to confirm what I had thought. He was certainly not above including religious ideas into his pop songs. Ask any Mormon about the "Share The Land" lyrics. A great jazzy rock song, that swings and features one of the few scat singing appearances in rock/pop. I always wondered what Blood, Sweat and Tears could have done with this song, it seems to call out for a nice horn arrangement.

@tubeornot2b no it’s not about that at all, according to the band Guess Who. That’s just your interpretation which says more about you than about the song’s original intent. It’s about a girl who had a reaction to LSD at a party and ended up in a coma.
