Pictures Of Matchstick Men Lyrics
When I look up to the skies
I see your eyes a funny kind of yellow
I rush home to bed I soak my head
I see your face underneath my pillow
I wake next morning, tired, still yawning
See your face come peeping through my window
Pictures of matchstick men and you
Mirages of matchstick men and you
All I ever see is them and you
Windows echo your reflection
When I look in their direction now
When will this haunting stop?
Your face it just won't leave me alone
Pictures of matchstick men and you
Mirages of matchstick men and you
All I ever see is them and you
You're in the sky and with the sky
You make men cry, you lie
You're in the sky and with the sky
You make men cry, you lie
Pictures of matchstick men and

So this is now "songs I love love to moan about.net" hmmm? Either post what you think about the meaning of the song or don't bother posting? Why come on here and moan about a song you don't like where others come on here to see what people have to say about the meanings cause maybe they listened and liked the song. So fuck off.
From songwriter Francis Rossi: "Most songs I heard when I was growing up were about love of some sort, but I've never been able to get too lovey-dovey with it. I often thought, Why can't I write a lovely, "Wake up, I want to make love tonight" song? I can't do that. I get embarrassed even saying it to you. But in our own way, Bob and I have written love songs. "Matchstick Men" was basically about my ex-wife. I'd just got married, and I thought, Oh, this is a mistake, what have I done?"
I was hoping to get some insight into this song, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. So here's my humble opinion: Since seeing the Nicolas Cage movie "Matchstick Men", I now know that it's a term for grifters or con men. So in this context, I think maybe the singer felt "conned" or "cheated" by a woman. Maybe she pretended to love him for financial gain? It's not necessarily guilt he feels, but shame for being fooled.
THE ONLY GUESS YOU COULD COME UP WITH!!!!
Oh my God!
Not only is it PATENTLY not about god...it is CLEARLY about the work of the painter L.S.Lowry. What a sad indictment on modern 'everyday' folk ie. human swill.
To leap from an OBVIOUS real-world reference (to Lowry) to some kind of happy-clappy god nonsense without even a breath of embarrassment or shame just shows how INCOMPREHENSIBLY ignorant the vast mass of human SLUDGE is. Oh sad sad day!

I have to agree with ohms. When this song first came out, I couldn't understand most of the words. I just liked the strange overmodulated trebley guitar and the wah-wah pedal effect. Now, 45 years later (am I reaaly that old?), with digital reproductions (clarity) and an internet to instantly look up song lyrics these songs that I thought were great sound even better. And, ohms, I agree that on close listening, your lyrics are correct. And I agree that this is probably a case of a guy...

C'mon. This was the mid/late 1960's. Psychedelic rock and roll was not about murder.
This is one of those songs that has that catchy guitar riff that grabs immediate attention that pulls you right into it, despite having lyrics that are more poetic than clear. Like so many one-offs of the charts in the sixties this song was yet another very distinct sound that contrasted its individuality among so many others. It was an age of psychedelic diversity, a tapestry of experimental wonders.
You guys are pretty harsh. I just heard this song on an advert and had to find out what it was. I reckon it's pretty good. Goes a bit crappy in the middle, but decent all-in-all.
Come on guys, this was their "Joes's Garage" period. First, early songs sounded like all other psychedelic stuff. Took a while before they discovered their sound. 12 bar boogie - catch any live vids from the mid '70's - sheer fun music.
and yet all you did is bitch as well...goodjob ass clowns
I think this songs about god (its the only guess i can come up with)...its obvious the references to the sun..but why would this be JUST about the sun..so i figured the sun ..sun light..light of god..-shruggs-
My impression was similar to Godz of Muzic, though I'm curious about the source. From what I've read it was based upon the artwork of L S Lowry.
@chris24j You are confusing matchSTICK men with matchSTALK men - the matchstalk men are the subjects of Lowry's art. Sung by Brian and Michael.

Also - I like this song, and enjoy most variations. I think Ozzie&TON, CVB, Atrocity, A. Lucassen, Angry Samoans, and others have all done interesting variations. Ozzie's and Atrocty's give me more of that 'haunted by guilt' (or at least someone no longer alive) feeling, and Lucassen and the original give me more of the haunting artwork feeling.
