So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
And I'm a black rainbow
And I'm an ape of God
I got a face that's made for violence upon
And I'm a teen distortion
Survived abortion
A rebel from the waist down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I wanna thank you mom
I wanna thank you dad
For bringing this fucking world
To a bitter end
I never really hated a one true god
But the God of the people I hated
You said you wanted evolution
The ape was a great big hit
You said you wanted revolution, man
And I say that you're full of shit
We're disposable teens
We're disposable teens
We're disposable teens
We're disposable
We're disposable teens
We're disposable teens
We're disposable teens
We're disposable
You said you wanted evolution
The ape with the great big hit
You said you wanted revolution, man
And I say that you're full of shit
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
The more that you fear us the bigger we get
The more that you fear us the bigger we get
And don't be surprised, don't be surprised
Don't be surprised when we destroy all of it
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
You said you wanted evolution
The ape was a great big hit
You said you wanted revolution, man
And I say that you're full of shit
Yeah yeah yeah
You said you wanted evolution

I think this song isn't making fun of the new generation.
The new generation knows its fucked up and unrefined. It knows its faults and shortcomings, its self-absorbed violent tendencies. It accepts them.
For all that, the new generation is better than the old. All the struggles for intellectual improvement (ape was a great big hit, Scopes-Monkey Trial) have resulted in a bunch of apes. The 60's (Revolution, man - Beatles) gave voice to a revolution that was nothing more than escapist ideal, that collapsed to become the world we have now, in spite of it. The religious upheaval has birthed a hateful, controlling, entitled, disfigured face to God.
Now its our turn, and our ugliness gives us power.
