Lucky Lyrics

Mean Mr. Mustard says he's bored
With life in the district
Can't afford the French quarter high
Says it gets old real quick
And he pails up next to me
And scrawled on the pavement
It says, son, time is all the luck you need

If I stay lucky then my tongue will stay tied
And I won't betray the things that I hide
There's not enough years underneath this belt
For me to admit the way that I felt

Mean Mr. Mustard says
Don't be the wave that crashes
From a sea of discontent
He says he's wrestled with that blanket
It leaves you cold and wet
Any way you stretch it
Divine apathy disease of my youth
Watch that you don't catch it

If I stay lucky then my tongue will stay tied
And I won't betray the things that I hide
There's not enough years underneath this belt
For me to admit the way that I felt

And I'm the wave that crashes
From a sea that turns it self
I'm inside out every chance I get to
See what it's like in hell, hey yeah

If I stay lucky then my tongue will stay tied
And I won't betray the things that I hide
There's not enough years underneath this belt
For me to admit the way that I felt
Ff I stay lucky then my tongue will stay tied
And I won't betray the things that I hide
There's not enough years underneath this belt
For me to admit the way that I felt

There is a reference I think to the movie "Dead Poets Society". The shy boy recites the poem about a blanket that leaves you cold no matter how you stretch it.

The guide for the narrator is an addict (french quarter high), poor, and knowledgable.

Experience and caring (rather than luck and apathy) are the most important things in life.

What a great song!!!every time i listen to it i changes my mind on what it means.every lyric takes me different places in my life where it means different things.but i think the best thing about is why it goes"time is all the luck that you ll need" which means you will still have time to make a desion on things. What a song

The premise of the song's chorus is taken from the play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett. It features a character named Lucky who never speaks through the entire play except once. He uses the phrase "divine apathy" in his speech. Other than that, his tongue is tied because his master won't let him speak. I also think I heard somewhere that Jason Ross had a friend who referred to himself as mean Mr. Mustard and that's where the verses come from.

Also, don't forget the bridge: "I'm the wave that crashes From a sea that turns itself Inside out every chance I get to See what it's like in Hell"

To me this song has always meant that if you hold everything inside, you create your own personal hell. The chorus is possibly the most powerful lyrics ever, especially the way they're sung. Anyway, long story short (too late) this is an amazing song.

the Rockcrown album is 7mary3"s best record, and this is the best song off that record.. i agree about the comments, but my two cents:

the song for me is more about getting older and leaving your angst behind you.. (time is all the luck you need- this means that if you live long enough then you'll have your good times, even after a whole lifetime of mess that you have made yourself...

So, I see this is an old post and this may never be read even, but I mostly agree with everyone's evaluations. However, even though I'm only thirty, I advise you take a listen to a song called "Mean Mr. Mustard" by none other than THE BEATLES

Mean Mister Mustard sleeps in the park Shaves in the dark trying to save paper Sleeps in a hole in the road Saving up to buy some clothes Keeps a ten-bob note up his nose Such a mean old man Such a mean old man His sister Pam works in a shop She never stops, she's a go-getter Takes him out to look at the queen Only place that he's ever been Always shouts out something obscene Such a dirty old man Dirty old man

Somebody help me out here......I really like this song...the way it sung and the music....im trying to figure out what it means though. I think that there is this younger, angry man who is pissed at the world. and there is this older cranky, yet wise man, (mr. mustard) that says to the younger man "you can't continue to be bitter against the world. it only makes your life more miserable. trust me i know, i hve been that direction" and the older guy continues to say that "the negative attitude and disdain for the world is contagious". If he's lucky, he will keep his mouth shut and not let out all the bitterness he holds inside.... any other ideas?
