The premise of the song's chorus is taken from the play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett. It features a character named Lucky who never speaks through the entire play except once. He uses the phrase "divine apathy" in his speech. Other than that, his tongue is tied because his master won't let him speak. I also think I heard somewhere that Jason Ross had a friend who referred to himself as mean Mr. Mustard and that's where the verses come from.

Also, don't forget the bridge: "I'm the wave that crashes From a sea that turns itself Inside out every chance I get to See what it's like in Hell"

To me this song has always meant that if you hold everything inside, you create your own personal hell. The chorus is possibly the most powerful lyrics ever, especially the way they're sung. Anyway, long story short (too late) this is an amazing song.
