Preaching The End of The World Lyrics

Hello, I know there's someone out there who can understand
And who's feeling the same way as me
I'm twenty-four and I've got everything to live for
But I know now that it wasn't meant to be
'Cause all has been lost and all has been won
And there's nothing left for us to save
But now I know tha tI don't want to be alone today
So if you find that you've been feeling just the same

Call me now it's alright
It's just the end of the world
You need a friend in the world
'Cause you can't hide
So call and I'll get right back
If your intentions are pure
I'm seeking a friend for the end of the world

I've got a photograph I'll send it off today
And you will see that I am perfectly sane
not for a lifetime or forever and a day
'Cause we know now that just won't be the case
There will be no commitment and no confessions
And no little secrets to keep
No little children or houses with roses just the end of the world and me
'Cause all has been gone and all has been done
And there's nothing left for us to say
But we could be together as they blow it all away
And we can share in every moment as it breaks

Call me now it's alright
It's just the end of the world
You need a friend in the world
'Cause you can't hide
So call and I'll get right back
If your intentions are pure
I'm seeking a friend for the end of the world

i dont know..if its about not wanting to be lonely..or needing someone else..to share ur life with.. i dont know..what chris was feeling when he wrote it.. but what i feel when i hear this song..is..how lonely i feel at times..when i look around and i know..that i cant truly count 2 people who will always be there for me purely..and how fucked up..humanity its, everyone's too busy with themselfs they cant even look around..and see the sunrise or anything pure.. just..what they need, want or what they think they deserve...,just selfish emotions..nothing pure..maybe thats the end of the world..everyday is..cuz of the way we act.. what i do belive i need, its my mom,my family, and my best and only friend.. who i would be lost without... and..sometimes..i mean just sometimes..i feel this..loneliness..consuming me..when i just hope someone would call..i think the problem its...to feel a lot..and to feel more than what u can handle.. im seeking myself..for the end of the world..

Wow, that was quite poetic, what you said. Almost as poetic as the song.

Yeah, this song makes me feel like there's nothing more romantic than the end of the world. Maybe because that's when there would be no point in lying anymore. Kind of like how they consider heresy as evidence in a courtroom only if they were dying words. It's kind of like the world's dying words, how we would live and act in dying days of the world.

Am I the only one who was wholly disappointed when the movie "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" (starring Steve Carell) came out and this song wasn't on the soundtrack.

I wasn't surprised, though, considering how much older this song is than that movie, not to mention the fact that this song wasn't exactly a radio hit or anything.

Still this song fits that movie too well in message, theme, and mood to not be included. This song even has the line "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" in it.

I really love this song, Chris' voice is just so soft in this song it makes you feel kinda warm inside.

anyway i think this song is just about wanting to be with someone and not wanting to be alone in the very last moments of your life. not wanting to die alone.

That movie completely ripped off this song.

I'm hearing a theme of someone that he loved dearly left him. He's looking to replace the void in his heart:

If your intentions are pure, I'm seeking a friend for the end of the world

The end could be depression leading to suicide.

This is really dark, depressing stuff that Chris wrote. Really good music.

My Interpretation

could mean having or wanting someone you can complete trust and love and always be there till the day you die

I think this was written in a tough period for Chris. A lot of his friends like Jeff Buckley and Andrew from Mother Love Bone were dying and it seemed to him he would end up all alone. Its really sad and to feel like you're the only one sometimes even when you're in a crowed room.

He's putting out an advertisement of sorts-the world is going to end and I'm all by myself.I don't know, because he's been content with being a loner until that point,or maybe he can't reach his friends,or something like that.So he's looking for a person that he can be with while the world ends.Because who wants to be on their own while the world is ending? And he talks about the kind of relationship he says he can have with that person. There will be no commitment or confessions,no sharing secrets. All he has to offer is his company while the world is ending. So he says,if there's someone out there who is also friendless and seeking company, they can call on him.And the cool thing about their relationship is that although there will be no intimate conversations and so on,there's an unspoken kinship of sorts between them and they're glad that they can be there for each other, and relieved to have found a friend to be with during this hard time, and that's what makes their relationship work. And while the world gets blown up,etc. they can find solace in the fact that at least they're not alone, and spend your final, breaking moments with a friend.

The first time I listened to this song, I heard the line, “But we could be together as they blow it all away”, I realized that when he wrote this song, at the age of 24, Chris had no hope of the world changing like so many of us did around that age. Because of depression or the lack of world leaders understanding as to what was needed to actually protect our world, there was and still is a feeling about those in leadership willing to end the world through futility and plain arrogance. And if those people were willing to destroy the world, all the rest of us should, at least, be able to watch it end with a friend. There won’t be any roses or pickets or children, just the end of the world.
