The Operation Lyrics

You fight with your right hand
And caress with your left hand
Everyone I know is sick to death of you

With a tear that's a mile wide
In the kite that you're flying
Everyone I know is sick to death of you
Ever since
You don't look the same
You're just not the same, no way
You say clever things and
You never used to

You don't catch what I'm saying
When you're deafened to advice
Everyone here is sick to the
Back teeth of you

With a tear that's a mile wide
In the kite that you're flying
Everyone here is sick to the
Tattoo of you

Ever since
You don't look the same
You're just not the same, no way
You say pleasant things and
There is no need to

Still, you fight with your right hand
And caress with your left hand
Ooh, ooh ...

Sad to say ...
How once I was in love with you
Sad to say ...

You don't catch what I'm saying
When you're deafened to advice
Ooh, ooh ...

Ever since
You don't look the same
You're just not the same, no way
What the hell have
They stuck into you ?

I could be wrong (but couldn't we all) but, my interpretation is that the song is about somebody who has suddenly become very religious, and acts better than the rest of them due to the sudden change.

"You fight with your right hand And caress with your left hand." The right/left hand thing is a biblical allusion, with the right hand being seen as good/correct and the left being seen as bad/incorrect. While using biblical allusion, Moz is saying at heart the person is a feisty-fighting person, but is faking being some super nice, correct, morally superior person.

I don't mean to rag on religion or anything, but being from a strictly religious family I can really see it in the song. The friend who was once just an average, fun person to be around became some 'morally superior, better than that' person.

"With a tear that's a mile wide In the kite that you're flying " That's Moz saying everybody can see through what the person is pretending to be.

"You don't look the same You're just not the same, no way You say pleasant things and There is no need to" Morrissey is just pointing out how artificial they're being.

As I said, I don't mean to be offensive or rebellious!

My Interpretation

@JeffryFeffry I agree its a commentary on change but its got nothing to do with religion imo

One of his best.

It's about political figures and their operations.

"You fight with your right hand and caress with your left hand" = they are hypocrites, doing the same things they claim they are against.

"With a tear that's a mile wide" = the put on that they care so much.

"In the kite that you're flying" = they act as if they are morally superior.

"Everyone I know is sick to death of you" = people are sick of their bullshit.

"You say clever things and you never used to" = they were more down to earth before they got elected, but now they have speech writers.

"You say pleasant things and there is no need to" = they talk a lot about fixing things instead of working on actually fixing things.

"How once I was in love with you" = I supported you and voted for you, but it turns out you were a fraud and now I'm disenchanted with you.

i think this is about someone who got sexual reasignment sergery. they are finaly happy and cofortable withthem selfes but their old friend hate them.

trans gederd people are often outcasts, the are seen as trators in the gay comunity and still just fags by the streight comunity.

sad to say i was once in love with you.

@kickme8x I don't think it's a literal operation. I think it's about a two-faced former friend trying to put on airs and act superior to the blokes he used to run with in order to fit in with a more "decent" crowd.

@kickme8x hell of a projection, buddy.
